고대 그리스 의학 저술을 모은 히포크라테스 전집에 실린 히포크라테스 선서. 의사가 지켜야 할 윤리를 규정한 것으로, 1948년 세계의사회에 의해 제네바 선언으로 개정되었다. 이를 토대로 확립된 의사 윤리는 오늘날에도 세계 모든 의과대학 졸업식에서 선서되고 있다.
제네바 선언 가운데는 "나의 생애를 인류 봉사에 바칠 것을 엄숙히 서약한다. 나의 양심과 품위를 가지고 의술을 베풀겠다. 환자의 건강과 생명을 첫째로 생각하겠다"는 등의 내용을 담고 있다. 이를 "자유의사로서 나의 명예를 걸고 이를 서약한다"고 못박는다.
하지만 작금 한국사회 속살은 그와는 거리감이 있는 듯싶다. 어느 지방 소재 의료원에서는 월급 3천만 원을 제시해도 응하는 의사가 없다는 하소연이 전파를 탄 바 있다. 생명이 경각에 달한 환자가 응급실 의사 부족으로 병원을 전전하다 구급차 안에서 사망하는 일도 발생한다.
정부가 필수의료와 지역의료 붕괴 위기를 극복하기 위해 의대 증원을 추진 중이다. 그런데 국민의 건강과 생명을 우선해야 할 전공의들이 그에 반발해 대거 의료 현장을 이탈해 있다. 자신들의 기득권 극대화를 위해 위중한 환자까지 외면한 채 집단 행동에 들어간 셈이다.
대한의협도 집단휴진을 예고했다. 이는 개원한 의사들에게도 병원 문 걸어 잠근 채 환자들을 외면하라는 것과 별반 다르지 않게 여겨진다. 상상조차 하기 어려운 개탄스러운 일이다. 이제 시민들이 직접 나서, 집단휴진에 참여한 병원 명단 공개 등 불매운동도 고려해야 할 듯싶다.
그와 함께 공분을 부르는 것은 서울의대·서울대병원 교수들이 오는 17일부터 무기한 전면 휴진을 밝히고 있어서다. 의료 현장에서 후학들의 바른 사표가 되어야 할 위치에 있는 그들이 도리어 집단 이기주의 극대화에 기름을 끼얹는 듯싶어 참담할 따름이다.
오죽했으면 분당서울대병원 노동조합이 지난 10일 병원 곳곳에 '의사제국 총독부의 불법 파업 결의 규탄한다'는 대자보를 붙인 채 "휴진으로 고통받는 이는 예약된 환자와 동료"라며 "휴진 결의를 멈춰달라"고 촉구했다. 지난 4월 30일에 이어 두 번째 대자보다.
이런 가운데서도 의료인 본연의 자세로 환자들 곁을 지키는 의사도 많다. 지성의 힘이고, 타인의 건강과 생명에 대한 고귀한 부름으로 인식하기 때문일 것이다. 부화뇌동하지 않고 의료 현장에서 큰 나무로 묵묵히 소임을 다하는 그들에게 깊은 존경과 찬사를 보내지 않을 수 없다.

A complaint went viral at a local medical center that no doctor would respond even if a monthly salary of 30 million won was offered. There are cases where patients whose lives are in danger die in ambulances while moving from hospital to hospital due to a shortage of emergency room doctors.
The government is seeking to increase the number of medical schools to overcome the crisis of collapse of essential medical services and local medical services. However, residents who should prioritize the health and lives of the people are rebelling against this and leaving the medical field in large numbers. In order to maximize their vested interests, they took collective action while ignoring even critically ill patients.
The Korean Medical Association also announced a mass vacation. This seems no different from telling doctors who have opened their own practice to lock the hospital doors and ignore patients.
