김재관 작가의 추상 작품세계는 그동안 ‘기하학적 추상회화’ 작품으로 57년간 일관되게 진행되어 왔다. 1970년대 ‘관계(Relationship) 시리즈’ 시대의 단색화의 평면과 그리드 시대를 거쳐, 일루전 큐브, 입 체 큐브를 키워드로 작품의 형식을 만들어 왔다.
그리드(Grid)와 방형(Cube)에서 출발한 김재관의 작품세계는 몇 단계의 변화를 거쳐 최근에는 ’왜곡된 기하학‘과 ’멀티플 기하학‘의 아름다움으로 확산하면서 발전하였고 추상세계의 아이콘이었던 정방형의 세계를 해체하고 더 자유스러운 기하학적 추상세계의 새로운 형태의 ‘율(律)’과 ‘색’으로 자유롭게 표현하고 있다. 2020년도 이후의 작품들은 ‘시각의 차이’, ‘관계 - 율과 색’, ‘빛과 색’ 시리즈 작품들은 ‘자연으로의 회귀’라는 관점에서 해석하며 자연의 현상을 기하학적 구조로 표현한다.
‘예술은 ‘꼭’ 미학적, 조형적 원칙과 원리에 따라 그려지는 것이 아니라는 생각을 하게 된다. 오랫동안 기학학적 추상구조의 이성적 해석으로 접근해 오던 작품 형식에서 벗어나 자연을 그리고 싶어진다. 자연을 상식적인 풍경화로 그리는 것이 아니라 ‘자연의 현상’- ‘빛’, ‘소리’, ‘색’, ‘율(律)’로 표현하고 싶은 것이다.

“자연은 나의 ‘생명의 무늬’라 생각하며 나의 마음속에 있는 생명의 무늬를 ‘씨줄’ ‘날줄’로 엮어서 만들어내는 것이다.”라고 생각하며 그 공간에 ‘빛’을 넣고 있다.‘-김재관 작업 노트 中-.
김재관 작가는 2024 흰물결 갤러리 초대전 - ’빛과 색, 그 울림‘展을 통해 색채나 조형에서 엄격한 형태와 절제 차원을 넘어 시각적인 표현을 새롭게 해체, 통합하며 가장 이상적인 세계의 공간을 지향하고 있다. 선과 색채의 하모니가 논리적 사유와 구성에서 벗어나 회화의 기본적인 평면성에 입체적 형태의 흔적을 남겨두고 자연과 생명의 사유적 공간의 세계를 보여준다. 리듬과 색, 그리고 빛과 형이상학적 질서로 가득한 공간을 통해 새로운 기하학적 세계의 공간을 느낄 수 있다.

Artist Kim Jae-gwan’s world of abstract works has been consistently progressing for 57 years as ‘geometric abstract painting’. After going through the flat and grid era of monochromatic painting in the ‘Relationship Series’ era of the 1970s, he created the form of his work using illusion cubes and three-dimensional cubes as keywords.
Jaegwan Kim's world of work, which started from grid and cube, went through several stages of change and recently developed into the beauty of 'distorted geometry' and 'multiple geometry', and the world of squares, which were icons of the abstract world. is being deconstructed and freely expressed in a new form of 'rhythm' and 'color' of a more free geometric abstract world.
