민주주의 나라에서 양반, 상놈이 어찌 따로 있으랴! 그러나 모든 백성이 주인인 나라에서도 그 하는 짓이 함께 살아가는 공동체의 기반을 강화하지는 못할망정 좁쌀만한 사익을 추구하느라 기반을 갉아먹는 짓을 하는 자는 바로 정신적인 ‘쌍놈’이자 ‘천민’이다. 적어도 80년대 후반 민주화가 시작된 이후 지금처럼 이다지도 정신적 천민들에 의해 정치가 어지럽게 된 적이 일찍이 없었다.
민주당은 오직 이재명 당 대표의 사법리스크를 저지하고 차기 대권의 획득으로 가는 길을 마련하기 위해 당헌, 당규를 뜯어고치는 작업을 거의 완료하였다. 그리고 목하 온갖 특검법안을 무리하게 추진하고 있고, 뚜렷이 중대한 직무상의 위법사유를 제시하지 못하면서도 대통령의 탄핵을 공공연하게 입에 올린다. 심지어 영장판사를 자기들 입맛에 맞는 판사로 고를 수 있게 하는 입법도 계획 중이라고 한다. 이 대표를 잘 아는 입장에서 한 마디 가냘프고 어설프게 들릴 충고를 하자면, 이런 ‘소탐대실(小貪大失)’의 우(愚)를 계속 범하여 정치에서 무엇보다 중요한 명분을 상실한다면 결코 차기 대통령이 될 일은 없을 것이다.
같은 야권의 조국혁신당을 보면 또 어떤가! 조국 대표는 자신의 유죄판결을 변명하고 그 효과를 상쇄하기 위해서인지 무작정 여권의 인사들을 흠집 내며 거친 투쟁의 자세로 일관하고 있다. 전형적인 ‘적반하장(賊反荷杖)’의 태도다. 지난 총선에서 그 좋던 세가 지금 한껏 꺾인 이유를 곰곰 생각해 보라. 국민은 조 대표가 비록 나쁜 짓은 했더라도 그 대가를 어느 정도 치렀으니, 그리고 그의 학식과 경륜으로 정치판에 제발 새로운 바람을 일으키며 국민에게 힘든 오늘을 이길 수 있는 미래의 참신한 비전을 제시해 주길 바랐던 것이다. 하지만 그가 지금 정치인으로서 하는 일은, 다른 정치인들과 하등 다르지 않다. 그 역시 이런 식으로 일관하면 스스로 자신의 꿈을 허물어뜨리는 결과로 이어질 것이다.
여권도 그렇다. 불과 몇 개월 전 헌정사상 여권이 치른 총선 중 가장 큰 참패를 초래한 패장이, 더욱이 그가 당헌에 보장된 대통령의 당무관여권도 ‘당무개입’이라고 하며 배제한 채 거대한 총선을 오로지 혼자서 이끌며 패배한 사람이 다시 당대표가 되겠다고 나선다. 이런 무도하고 천박한 일은 일찍이 없었다. 여야를 막론하고, 적어도 공부를 더 하고 오겠다며 외국으로 가서 1년 정도는 지낸 후 국민의 뜻을 조심스레 살피며 정계에 복귀하는 것이 관행이었다.
그리고 그는 무기력한 여당을 복구시키기 위해서라고 이유를 내걸었는데 우스운 일이다. 자신의 잘못으로 안게 된 결과를 그렇게 헌신짝처럼 내던지며 오불관언으로 말하는 그 철면피함이 가관이다. 세상에 제일 무서운 자는 어쩌면 바로 이런, 부끄러움이라곤 모르는 채 ‘팬티 벗고 덤벼드는 자’의 부류일지 모른다. 그는 지금 조급하게도 ‘임표(林彪)의 길’을 서두르고 있다.
한국 정치는 공익보다는 눈앞에 닥친 개인적 사익을 우선시키는 정치인들에 의해 옳고 그름의 기준을 완전히 상실한 천민정치로 타락하였다. 떳떳함이 사라진 한국 정계에는 지금 견디기 힘든 오욕의 열풍이 불고 있다. 그 바람은 한국 사회 전체에 확산하며 국민은 심한 스트레스로 신음한다. 저 못난 사람들이 언제 정신을 차려 정신적 천민의 몰상식한 모습을 벗어나 우리를 미래로 향하는 길로 제대로 인도해 줄 수 있을 것인가?
얼핏 드는 생각은, 도저히 저들이 서로 칭칭 감겨 만든 악순환의 고리를 깨는 것이 불가능한 것처럼 보인다. 저 몇몇 사람들만 없으면 우리에게 상쾌한 바람이 불어올 것 같다. 답답한 마음에, 이럴 때 우리에게 헌법상으로 인정된 저항권(抵抗權)을 발동하여 저들을 한꺼번에 몰아내어 버릴 수도 있지 않을까 하는 생각마저 든다.
