뭇사람에게 '애국'이라는 단어를 떠올리게 하면 무슨 생각을 할까 궁금해진다.
추석 명절이 되니 고향 생각을 하는 사람들이 많을 것이다. 두고 와서 못 가는 고향도 있고 바빠서 못 가는 경우도 있을 것이다. 떠나 보니 어머니라는 단어만 들어도 더욱 생각이 나는 듯하다. 특히, 외국에서 지내다보면 모국 생각이 많이 날 것이고 혹자는 태극기만 보아도 애국심을 느낀다고 한다.
필자가 30여년전애 미국에서 LG전자 주재원 생활을 할 때 현대 소나타 브랜드를 자가용으로 사용한 적이 있었다. 남들은 미국까지 와서 왜 국산차를 타느냐고 하기도 하었지만 나는 한국 물건을 판매하러 온 사람이 국산 제품을 애용하는 것이 당연하다고 말했다. 거래선을 만날 때마다 자랑스럽게 내 차를 Made in Korea라고 소개하였다. 당시 현대차의 resale value가 외제차에 비하여 현저히 낮았음에도 후회는 전혀 없다. 현재 LG의 세계적 브랜드 위상은 나와 같은 구성원들의 헌신적인 일상적 애국심이 축적되어 이루어낸 결과라고 필자는 자부한다. 애국심을 가지면 열정이 생기고 인내심이 생긴다. 통섭 관점에서 보면 애국심은 여러 상황에서 연결되어 있는 것이다.
필자가 정의하는 애국은 이렇다. 나와 국가의 이해가 충돌할 때 국가편을 드는 게 애국이다. 즉, 내가 손해를 보더라도 국익을 놓고 의사 결정하는 마음이 애국심인 것이다. 그 반대는 매국심이겠다.
대기업 및 중소기업 연구원 출신들이 회사의 영업이나 제조 비밀을 들고 나가 중국이나 베트남등지에 팔아먹는 사건들이 다수 발생하였고 현재도 진행형이다. 자신의 재정적 이익을 위하여 회사에, 국가에 막대한 피해를 주는 행위가 바로 매국노의 짓이다. 잘못된 의사결정으로 국민 혈세를 지 돈 쓰듯이 하는 위정자나 공무원들도 당연히 매국노 그룹에 속한다. '대통령실, 잘 들어라.'라고 문득 말하고 싶다.

애국심을 발휘하려면 스스로 성실하여야 하고 자신의 잘못을 인정하는 용기가 있어야 한다. 성실성이라는 것은 생각과 말과 행동이 일치하는 것을 일컫는다. 소위, 심리학에서 말하는 통전성이라는 개념이다.
따라서, 애국심 교육은 제대로 된 사고와 사상, 철학을 가르치는 일이고 행동하게 만드는 일이다. 필자는 광복군 출신의 부친으로부터 영향을 많이 받았다. 그래서, 자원이 없는 우리나라를 위하여 무역을 하여 외화를 벌어야겠다고 생각하였고 소박한 심정으로 종합 무역상사인 반도상사를 입사하게 되었다.
지금처럼 대한민국 역사를 왜곡, 변질시키는 공직자, 교육자, 사회의 지도자들은 이 말을 새겨들어야 한다. 그 어느 누구도 사회에 나온 성인을 가르치려고 하지 않으므로 소위 남에게 영향을 주는 자리에 있는 사람들은 스스로 수양하고 학습하고 성찰하며 변화하는 노력을 하여야 한다. 스스로 말이다. 그래야만, 대한민국이 강력한 선진국가로 자리매김할 수 있다.
내가 '행복한 수업'이라는 타이틀로 대학생들을 지도한 시절이 몇 년 있었다. 그야말로 학생들을 변화시키기 위하여 몰두한 시절이었고 성과도 엄청났다. 경험상, 교육으로 시람들을 변화시키는 것은 어려운 일이 아니다. 나는 LG에서의 22년 생활과 그 이후 교수로서의 생활을 통하여 많은 사람들을 변화시켰고 또한 현재의 일상 생활을 통하여 많은 사람들을 변화시키고 있음을 체험한다. 스타는 탄생하는 게 아니고 만들어진다는 확실한 신념을 가지고 말이다. 기회가 되면 성인 대상의 체계적인 혁신 교육을 재개하고 싶다. 온국민의 애국을 위하여. art2016@naver.com

There have been many incidents where researchers from large corporations and small and medium-sized companies took the company’s business or manufacturing secrets and sold them to China, Vietnam, and other places, and this is still ongoing. Acts that cause enormous damage to the company and the country for their own financial gain are the actions of traitors. Politicians and public officials who make wrong decisions and spend the people’s tax money as if it were their own money are also naturally part of the group of traitors. In order to demonstrate patriotism, you must be sincere and have the courage to admit your mistakes. Sincerity refers to the consistency of your thoughts, words, and actions. This is the concept of holism in psychology.

I was greatly influenced by my father, who was a member of the Korean Liberation Army.
