자녀 입시 비리, 청와대 감찰 무마, 청탁금지법 위반, 업무방해 등 8개 혐의로 1심과 2심에서 징역 2년에 추징금 600만원이 선고된 조국혁신당 조국 대표에 대한 상고심에서 대법원이 12일 이를 확정했다. 2019년 12월, 총 13개 혐의로 기소된 지 무려 5년 만이다.
이로써 조 대표는 의원직을 잃게 됐으며, 향후 5년 동안 피선거권이 제한돼 다음 대선 출마가 불가능하다. 정당법에 의해 당원 자격이 상실되므로 당대표직도 내려놓아야 한다. 검찰의 신원 확인 절차를 거쳐 교도소에 수감되며, 비례대표직은 후순위 후보인 백선희 서울신학대학교 교수에게 승계됐다.
한편 조 대표는 11일 열린 국회 본회의 긴급현안질문을 통해 “심각한 상황이 벌어져서 장갑차가 국회로 들어왔는데 대통령과 만나 아무 얘기 안 했단 말이냐”고 한덕수 총리를 추궁한 바 있다. 이와 관련, 이종배 서울시의원은 조국 대표를 허위사실 유포에 의한 명예훼손 혐의로 서울경찰청에 고발했다.
이 시의원은 “계엄령 선포 후 사회 혼란이 매우 극심한 엄중한 상황에서 장갑차를 출동했다는 허위 사실은 여론에 매우 악영향을 끼치고, 국민을 가짜뉴스에 현혹되게 할 수 있는 심각한 범죄"라며 "국회 뿐만 아니라 계엄령 선포 후 장갑차가 출동한 사실이 없다"고 강조했다.
조국혁신당 김준형 의원 또한 11일 국회 외교통일위원회에서 "골드버그 대사가 윤석열 정부 사람들과는 상종을 못 하겠다는 취지로 본국에 보고했다"는 주장을 한 바 있다. 이에 대해 주한 미국대사관은 11일 당일 소셜미디어 X(옛 트위터)를 통해 이를 정면으로 반박하는 글을 게재했다. 특히 김 의원 실명까지 적시하며 강한 불쾌감을 드러냈다.
미국대사관은 “외교 대화의 세부 내용을 공개하지 않지만 김준형 의원이 필립 골드버그 주한미국대사의 발언이라고 언론에 주장한 내용은 전혀 사실이 아니다(utterly false)”는 입장을 분명히 했다. 미국 대사관이 주재국 의원 실명을 직접 거론하며 사실관계를 확인한 것은 매우 이례적이다.
김 의원은 또 "미국 주도의 정보 공유 협의체인 '파이브 아이즈(미국·영국·캐나다·호주·뉴질랜드)' 소속 주한 대사들이 따로 만나 윤 대통령이 직을 유지할 경우 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 참석을 보이콧하기로 했다"는 주장도 했다. 이와 관련, 주한 주요국 대사관도 11일 밤 이를 반박하는 입장을 냈다.
주한 영국 대사관은 "제기된 주장은 부정확(inaccurate)하다"며 김 의원 발언에 선을 그었다. 주한 호주 대사관 또한 "호주는 2025 APEC 비공식고위관리회의(ISOM)에 참석했으며 앞으로도 한국의 APEC 정상회의 개최를 지지할 것"임을 강조했다. 한국 정치인의 국회 발언에 대해 주한 외국 대사관들이 즉각 반박에 나선 셈이다.
한국 외교부는 “계엄령 발표 직후 고위급 차원에서 주한미국대사와 소통했다”며 “이후에도 각급에서 긴밀히 소통해 오고 있다”고 밝혔다. 따라서 김 의원의 무분별한 발언이 혹여 어떤 정치적 목적을 노린 여론 호도용이었다면 심각한 일이 아닐 수 없다. 불필요한 외교적 마찰과 혼란 가중으로 이어질 수 있음을 깊이 자각할 일이다.
