일본 TBS 보도에 따르면 지난 9일 오후 8시 3분 사쿠라지마 미나미다케(南岳) 정상 화구에서 분화가 발생했다.
분화 당시 화구에서는 화산재가 2000m 상공까지 치솟았으며 분석도 1100m까지 날아갔다.
분화 당시 모습은 유튜브 등에도 공개돼 있다. 이 영상을 보면, '화산 번개'가 번쩍이는 장면도 포착됐다.
화산 번개는 화산이 폭발하면서 화산재 속 입자가 마찰해 생긴 정전기가 번개를 만들어내는 현상이다. 화산재가 뒤엉킨 검은 연기 사이에서는 여러 차례 화산 번개가 관측됐다.
화산은 11일 오후 1시 32분 추가 분화했으며 연기가 1000m 상공까지 피어올랐다.
일본 기상청은 주변 지역에 '분화 경계' 3단계 조치를 내려 입산을 막고 있다.
한편, 해발 1117m의 사쿠라지마는 일본에서 가장 활발한 화산 중 하나로 꼽히며, 올해만 30번 넘게 분화했다. 지금까지 17번의 대분화가 있었고, 1914년엔 58명이 숨지기도 했다.
