미국 켄터키주 인구 6천명의 윌모어시에 있는 애즈베리대학에서 하나님의 임재를 체험한 영적 부흥운동이 전 세계로 불길처럼 번져나가고 있다.
한국에서도 깊은 관심을 갖고 이 부흥운동에 동참하려는 움직임이 있다.
지난 2월8일, 평소처럼 애즈배리대학교 예배가 끝났는데 현장에 20-30명의 학생들이 남아서 기도하는 가운데 하나님 영적 임재가 나타나서 그것을 온몸으로 느낀 학생들은 친구들에게 다양항 매체로 알리기 시작했다.
그 후 학생들도 교수도 예배당으로 모여들었다.
이 사실이 퍼져나가면서 지역 목회자들과 성도들이 모여들기 시작하고, 마침내 온라인상에 퍼져 미국 각지에서 수많은 사람들이 모여 들었고 심지어 해외에서도 이 현장을 보기 위해 찾아오고 있다.
현재는 애즈배리 대학교의 Hughes 예배당 안에는 미국 각지에서 모여온 사람들이 감사와 찬양, 기도와 말씀으로 24시간 예배를 드리고 있다.
밖에는 예배당에 들어가기 위해서도 몇 시간을 기다리고 있는 사람들로 붐비고 있다.
이번 애즈배리 영적 부흥 운동은 미국 기독교계의 새로운 반전의 계기로 생각해서 기대가 크다. 특히 영적 각성은 하나님의 임재와 사랑을 깊이 체험하는 예배에서 시작 된다는 점을 간과해서는 안 된다.
