[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 경남도는 바다가 반짝이는 아름다운 도시, 통영에 위치한 지방관리연안항 중 첫 번째로 ‘중화항 개발사업’의 첫삽을 뜬다고 19일 밝혔다.
섬 관광 활성화로 인한 연안여객 수요 증가에 따라 혼잡한 당포항(구(舊) 삼덕항)의 국가어항 기능을 정상화하고, 연안 기능(교통·물류)은 중화항으로 이전한다.
중화항은 소형어선들의 피항지이자 어업활동의 거점 역할을 해왔지만, 시설 노후화와 부족한 정온 수역으로 인해 태풍 시 피항지로서 한계가 있었다.
이번 개발사업을 통해 지역주민의 숙원 사업이 마침내 본격화된다.
중화항 개발사업은 총 469억 원을 투입해 △(외곽시설) 방파제 270m, 연결제 100m △(접안시설) 차도선부두 140m, 소형선부두 90m △호안시설 106m △매립·준설 등을 추진한다.
단순한 시설개선을 넘어 여객·어업·물류, 관광기능까지 포함한 다기능 복합항만으로 조성해 어업인 소득 증대는 물론, 관광객에게 매력적인 항만 환경을 제공함으로써 지역 경제에 활력을 불어 넣을 것으로 기대된다.
경남도와 해양수산부는 2009년 4월 중화항을 연안항으로 지정, 2020년 12월 제4차 전국 연안항 기본계획에 중화항 개발계획을 반영했다.
2022년 6월 기본 및 실시설계용역을 시작으로 2025년 4월까지 제반 행정절차를 완료하고, 2025년 5월 착공해 2029년 12월 완공할 계획이다.
이상훈 도 해양수산국장은 “중화항 개발을 통해 기상악화 시 안전한 선박 피항 지원으로 항만 이용의 안전성 확보와 지역 경제성장 및 섬 관광 활성화를 통한 대표적인 관광명소로 거듭날 것으로 기대된다며 앞으로 시민과 관광객들의 의견을 지속적으로 수렴하여 더욱 아름다운 항만을 만들어 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
