이재명 대통령이 18일(현지시간) 무함마드 빈 자이드 알나하얀 아랍에미리트(UAE) 대통령과 취임 후 첫 정상회담을 가졌다.
이 대통령은 이날 오전 11시 6분께 UAE 아부다비 카사르 알 와탄 대통령궁에 도착 후 정상회담에 앞서 15분 간 열린 공식 환영식에 참석했다.
확대 회담은 오전 11시 14분부터 30분까지 16분, 단독 회담 경우 11시 40분부터 12시 21분까지 41분 간 각각 진행됐다.
이날 회담 계기로 한·UAE 간 AI(인공지능)·원전 등 에너지·문화·우주·방산 협력 방안을 담은 MOU(양해각서)가 체결됐다.
체결된 MOU는 전략적 AI 협력 프레임워크·AI 및 우주 협력·포괄적 경제 동반자 협정(CEPA) 경제협력위 행정·운영·바이오 헬스·지식 재산·원자력 신기술 등 7개다.
이 대통령은 회담에서 "(양국이) 경제적 공동체로 발전해나가자. UAE는 형제의 나라"라며 "양국은 기존 4대 핵심 협력 분야인 투자·방위산업·원자력·에너지에 더해 인공지능(AI)·헬스·문화 등이 포함된 미래지향적 첨단 기술 분야로 협력을 확대키로 했다"고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "UAE는 중동·아프리카 국가 중 한국과 유일하게 특별 전략적 동반자 관계를 맺고 있는 나라"라며 "양국 간 협력은 바라카 원전 사업·아크 부대란 것으로 명확히 특정지어진다 생각한다"고 말했다.
이어 "(UAE는) 세계 6대 산유국인데도 불구 자원 아닌 기술·민간 개발을 통해 경이로운 발전을 이뤄내고 있다"며 "선친·UAE 국부이신 (고) 자이드 대통령 선견지명을 이어받아 놀라운 눈부신 발전을 이뤄내고 있는 점이 경이롭기까지 하다"고 했다.
또 "대한민국은 양국 100년 동맹을 위해 전방위적 협력 준비가 돼 있다"며 "국방·방산·AI·원자력·보건·의료 등 양국 모두에 경쟁력과 전략적 중요성이 큰 분야가 참 많다"고 했다.
더불어 "양국이 거래·계약을 통한 이익 추구란걸 넘어 모두의 성장·공동 번영을 위해 거침없이 나아갈 수 있도록 미래지향적 협력 구조를 단단히 구축해 나갈 수 있었으면 한다"고 덧붙였다.
무함마드 대통령은 "아부다비가 원래 섬으로 이뤄졌는데 자이드 대통령께서 아부다비와 육지를 잇는 무사파라는 교량을 건설키로 마음먹었고 그때 아버지께서 한국 회사를 택했다"며 "그 교량이 아부다비와 육지를 이은 것처럼 이제 양국을 잇는 그 다리가 UAE·한국 간 협력·개발 욕망을 더욱 더 채워줄 수 있길 기대한다"고 했다.
그러면서 "(UAE 바라카 원전은) 모든 호기가 성공적으로 운영을 완료해 현재도 운영되고 있다"며 "양국 간 파트너십이 공고히 유지되게 하는 근간"이라고 평했다.
또 "한·UAE 간 협력을 더 확대하고 지평을 넓히고자 하는 분야는 바로 국방"이라며 "UAE 주둔 아크 부대 활동을 높이 평가하며 이런 종류 협력이 더 확대되길 희망한다"고 했다.

During the meeting, President Lee stated, "Let's develop into an economic community. The UAE is a brother country."
