서울 중구 서소문역사공원에는 천주교 순교자 현양탑이 있다. 이 현양탑에는 신유박해(1801년), 기해박해(1839년), 병인박해(1866~1871년)때의 44위 순교성인과 54위 순교자 명단을 새겨놓았다. 이씨조선이 종교를 탄압했던 아주 나쁜 사례에 속한다. 이 탄압시기에 수많은 천주교인들이 살해(처형) 당 했다. 그러나 천주교를 탄압했던 이씨조선은 몰락했고, 천주교는 오늘날 한국의 거대 종교 단체로 성장했다. 권력이 패하고 종교가 승리한 것이다.

미국에서 몰몬교(예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교회)는 지난 19세기 초부터 비 몰몬교도들과 지역 사회로부터 심각한 탄압-박해를 겪었다. 일리노이주 등지에서 교도권 확장과 이주로 인해 기존 정착민들과의 갈등이 심화됐다. 이는 몰몬교에 대한 직접적 탄압으로 이어졌다. 몰몬교는 1830년대 미국 내 정착 초기부터 기존 기독교 교파와 다른 교리, 일부다처제(19세기 당시 일부일처제가 일반적이던 사회에서), 그리고 빠른 세력 확장으로 인해 비 몰몬교도들과 갈등을 빚었다. 1844년 일리노이주에서 조셉 스미스와 그의 형이 폭동으로 사망하는 사건이 발생하며, 몰몬교에 대한 사회적 탄압이 본격화됐다. 이후 몰몬교도들은 박해를 피해 1846년 유타주로 이주해 정착했다. 하지만 오늘날의 유타주는 '몰몬주'로 불릴 만큼 몰몬교가 중심적 역할을 하고 있다. 종교에 탄압을 가했던, 그 당시 권력들은 모두 사라졌다. 탄압받았던 몰몬교가 승리한 셈이다.

mbc는 12월9일자 “이 대통령 "종교단체도 헌법·법률 위반 행위 시 해산시켜야" 제목의 기사에서 ”종교재단의 정치개 입 사례를 지적했던 이재명 대통령이 헌법과 법률을 위반한 일이 있다면 재단을 해산시켜야 한다고 재차 강조했다.“고 전제하고 ”이 대통령은 오늘 오전 용산 대통령실에서 열린 제53차 국무회의에서 조원철 법제처장에게 종교단체 정치개입에 따른 해산 검토 상황을 물은 뒤 '개인도 범죄를 저지르고 반사회적 행위를 하면 제재가 있는데 법인격체도 헌법·법률에 위반되는 지탄받을 일을 하면 해산시켜야 한다'고 말했다“고 보도했다. 이어 ”대통령실은 이 대통령의 종교단체 해산 언급이 나온 데 대해 특정 종교를 겨냥한 건 아니었다고 설명했다”고 덧붙였다. 대통령실은 이재명 대통령의 종교단체 해산 거론이 특정 종교를 지목한 게 아니라는 주문이었다.
