[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 2026 국제해양영화제가 오는 18~ 21일까지 해운대 영화의전당에서를 개최된다. 올해로 9회째를 맞이하는 국제해양영화제는 바다와 인간의 관계, 해양환경, 생태와 공존 등을 주제로 한 국내 유일의 해양 특화 영화제다.
올해 영화제는 바다 앞에, 우리는(Standing Before the Sea)라는 주제 아래 15개국에서 출품된 총 47편의 장편과 단편 해양 영화를 선보인다. 평소 접하기 어려운 세계 유수의 해양 영화들이 상영돼 관객들에게 폭넓은 감상 기회를 제공할 예정이다.
오는 18일 열리는 개막식에서는 두 편의 다큐멘터리가 개막작으로 연속 상영된다. 영국의 캐서린 프랜시스와 캠벨 브루어 감독이 연출한 남극을 위한 연대는 남극의 변화가 전 세계 생태계와 경제, 지역 공동체에 미치는 영향을 다각도로 조명한다. 함께 상영되는 호아킨 아줄레와 훌리안 아줄레 감독의 도메인 원은 상업적 남획으로 위기에 처한 남극 해양 생태계의 엄중한 현실을 고발한다.
21일 영화제의 대미를 장식할 폐막작은 타샤 반 잔트와 세바스티안 제크 감독의 어둠 속에 빛이 있었다로 선정됐다. 이 작품은 해양생물학자 에디 위더 박사를 따라 심해의 황혼대인 트와일라이트 존을 탐사하는 다큐멘터리다. 경이로우면서도 연약한 지구 해양 생태계의 모습을 생생하게 보여주며 바다 생명에 대한 이해를 넓힌다.
주요 상영작들의 면면도 다양하다. 썰물이 시작된 후 조수웅덩이에 갇힌 생물들이 단 13시간 동안 펼치는 사투를 담은 생존까지 13시간: 고양이상어의 모험, 인간과 인어가 함께 살아가는 세상에서 서로를 이해하고 사랑하게 되는 과정을 그린 로맨스 판타지 애니메이션 차오, 바다숲을 되살리기 위해 나선 해달들의 이야기를 통해 환경의 소중함을 전하는 작전명 해달: 바다숲을 구하라 등이 관객을 만난다.
특히 올해 영화제는 인공지능(AI) 해양영화 섹션을 새롭게 추가해 운영한다. 인공지능 해양환경영화 공모를 통해 선정된 엄마와의 여행 등 3편과 초청 상영작 아틀란티스의 꿈 등 8편을 포함해 총 11편의 AI 해양영화를 대중에게 선보인다.
영화 상영 외에 관객이 참여할 수 있는 소통 프로그램도 풍성하게 마련된다. 영화 상영 후 감독, 평론가 등 관계자와 관객이 작품에 대한 이야기를 나누는 관객과의 대화(GV)가 진행되며, 해양 전문가들과 현재 바다가 당면한 문제에 대해 논의하는 강연과 토크쇼도 열린다.
올해 첫선을 보이는 수친자 클럽 특별섹션은 바다수영과 물을 사랑하는 관객들이 모여 수영을 주제로 한 영화 4편을 관람하고 서로의 경험을 공유하는 커뮤니티형 프로그램이다. 아울러 6월 20일 오후 12시부터 6시까지 영화의전당 6층 라운지에서는 바다를 주제로 한 로컬 브랜드 마켓인 바다 마르쉐가 열린다. 이곳에서는 해양환경 체험 부스와 포토존 등이 함께 운영돼 시민들이 해양문화를 보다 친근하게 체험할 수 있다.
이번 행사는 부산시와 한국해양진흥공사가 공동 주최하고 국제해양영화제 조직위원회가 주관한다. 부산시는 이번 영화제를 단순한 영화 상영을 넘어 자생력을 갖춘 지속 가능한 해양관광 콘텐츠로 확장해 글로벌 해양관광도시로 도약하겠다는 방침이다.

The 2026 International Ocean Film Festival will be held for four days from June 18 to 21 at Busan Cinema Center (Dureraum) in Haeundae. Celebrating its 9th anniversary this year, it stands as the only ocean-specialized film festival in South Korea, dedicated to exploring the relationship between humans and the ocean, marine environments, and ecological coexistence. Jointly hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and the Korea Ocean Business Corporation, and organized by the International Ocean Film Festival Organizing Committee, the event aims to transition from a conventional film screening into a self-sustaining marine tourism initiative, accelerating Busan’s leap as a global maritime tourism hub.
Under this year's central theme, Standing Before the Sea, the festival will showcase a comprehensive lineup of 47 feature-length and short marine films from 15 countries. It is designed to offer audiences a rare opportunity to experience acclaimed international ocean cinema that is otherwise difficult to access.
The opening ceremony on June 18 will feature a back-to-back screening of two compelling documentaries. All Eyes on Antarctica, directed by British filmmakers Catherine Frances and Cambell Brewer, examines how shifts in the Antarctic ecosystem impact global economies and local communities. It will be accompanied by Antarctica-Domain One, directed by Joaquin Azule and Julian Azule, which confronts the stark reality of the Antarctic marine ecosystem currently threatened by commercial overfishing.
To close the festival on June 21, A Life Illuminated, directed by Tasha Van Zandt and Sebastian Zeck, has been selected as the closing film. The documentary follows marine biologist Dr. Edith Widder as she explores the twilight zone of the deep sea. The film captures both the wonder and fragility of the Earth's marine ecosystems, broadening the audience's understanding of marine life.
The main selections feature diverse themes and storytelling. Highlights include 13 Hours to Survive-Trapped at Low Tide, a survival drama showcasing the life-or-death struggle of creatures trapped in a tide pool after the ebb tide begins; ChaO, a romantic fantasy animation delicately portraying how human and mermaid coexist and find mutual understanding; and Mission Sea Otter – Saving California’s Kelp Forests, which highlights the importance of marine ecosystems through the story of sea otters working to restore kelp forests.
A notable addition this year is the newly introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ocean Film section. The segment will feature a total of 11 AI-driven marine films, including three contest winners such as A Journey with Mom, alongside eight curated selections including Dream of Atlantis.
Beyond film screenings, a rich program of interactive events will strengthen communication with visitors. Guest Visit (GV) sessions will allow audiences to engage in discussions with directors and film critics after screenings, while lectures and talk shows featuring marine experts will address urgent challenges facing the oceans today.
The festival will also launch the Su-Chin-Ja Club special section, a community-oriented program tailored for swimming and ocean enthusiasts to view four water-themed films and share their personal experiences. Additionally, on June 20 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., the 6th-floor lounge of the Busan Cinema Center will host Bada Marché, a local brand market inspired by the sea. The market will operate alongside marine environment experiential booths and photo zones to offer citizens an accessible way to engage with maritime culture.
