사람들은 흔히 말한다. "보수는 부패로 망하고 진보는 분열로 망한다." 일리가 있는 말이다. 그러나 그것만으로는 설명이 부족하다. 사실 민주세력은 태생부터 하나의 집단이 아니었다. 독재정권에 맞섰던 시절에도 학생운동이 있었고, 노동운동이 있었고, 농민운동이 있었고, 종교계가 있었고, 지식인들이 있었다. 서로의 생각과 노선은 달랐지만 민주주의라는 더 큰 가치 아래 함께 싸웠다.
민주주의는 원래 다양성 위에 세워진다. 그래서 역설적으로 민주주의가 성공할수록 차이는 드러난다. 독재에 맞설 때는 하나였지만, 민주주의가 시작되면 각자가 꿈꾸는 세상이 달라지기 때문이다. 누군가는 복지를 말하고, 누군가는 노동을 말하고, 누군가는 평화를 말하고, 누군가는 성장을 말한다. 이것은 실패가 아니다.
