【충북 브레이크뉴스】임창용 기자=충주시는 사적 충주 장미산성에서 남쪽으로 약 700m 떨어진 중앙탑면 탑평리 일원에서 진행 중인 학술 발굴조사를 통해 마한과 백제시대의 목책성을 새롭게 발견했다. 이번에 확인된 성곽은 충주 지역에서 최초로 발굴된 목책성으로, 일정한 간격으로 나무 기둥을 세워 방어벽을 만든 고대의 핵심 방어시설이다.
발굴된 목책성은 동편의 남한강을 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있는 구릉지대에 자리를 잡고 있어, 과거 수로를 통해 접근하는 적대 세력을 감시하고 방어하기 위해 축조된 것으로 보인다. 구조적으로는 내·외 2열로 축조한 사각형의 기둥구덩이가 산능선을 따라 연속해서 이어지는 형태이며 일부 구덩이에는 나무기둥의 흔적이 선명하게 남아 있다. 특히 목책의 상부를 제거한 뒤 그 위에 다시 토성을 덧쌓아 축조한 흔적이 확인되어 학계의 비상한 관심을 모으고 있다.
목책성을 허물고 축조한 토성의 기초다짐층에서는 시루와 토기 손잡이, 방추차 등 3~4세기경의 생활용기를 비롯해 당시 철 생산이 이루어졌음을 증명하는 송풍관과 철찌꺼기 등 역사적 가치가 높은 유물들이 대거 출토됐다. 이는 인근의 장미산성이나 탑평리유적 등 백제시대로 추정되는 기존 유적들보다 앞선 단계로, 남한강 서안 일대의 가장 이른 시기 성곽으로서 충주 고대 역사의 공백을 메워줄 결정적 자료로 평가받는다.
충주시 관계자는 이번에 확인된 탑평리 목책성이 남한강을 중심으로 형성된 충주의 고대 방어체계와 정치·문화적 변천 과정을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 이정표가 될 것이라며, 앞으로도 체계적인 조사와 보존·관리 방안을 마련해 지역 문화유산의 역사적 가치를 널리 알리는 데 최선을 다하겠다고 밝혔다.
