매년 6월이면 라이온스와 로터리 클럽은 새로운 회장과 임원을 선출하며
새로운 회기를 시작한다. 한때는 국제적인 봉사단체로서
지역사회와 국제사회에 큰 역할을 담당했던 조직들이지만,
인터넷과 SNS가 일상이 된 오늘날에는
그 존재 의미가 예전만큼 크지 않다는 생각이 든다.
물론 여전히 의미 있는 봉사활동을 이어가는 클럽도 많다.
그러나 현실적으로는 단순한 친목 모임처럼 운영되는 경우도 적지 않고,
회비만 납부한 채 활동에는 거의 참여하지 않는 회원들도 상당수다.
무엇보다 개인의 생업과 시간이 우선인 시대가 되었기 때문이다.
필자 역시 현재 라이온스클럽 활동은 잠시 쉬고 있다.
새로운 클럽 창립을 추진했지만 최종 협의가 이루어지지 않았고,
현재는 로터리 클럽 회원 자격만 유지하고 있다.
내년이면 로터리 입회 30년을 맞지만, 숫자 자체에 특별한 의미를 두지는 않는다.
세월이 흐르면서 클럽의 분위기도 많이 달라졌다.
회원들의 연령층이 높아지면서 활력은 예전 같지 않고,
새로운 세대의 유입도 쉽지 않다. 자연스럽게 활동의 재미와
동기 역시 예전보다 많이 줄어든 것이 사실이다.
과연 지금도 전통적인 소셜클럽이 과거와 같은 역할을 해야 하는 시대인지,
아니면 새로운 형태의 네트워크와 봉사 방식으로 변화해야 하는 것인지 생각하게 된다.
시간과 비용을 투자하는 만큼의 가치와 의미를 느끼기 어려운 현실 앞에서,
이러한 고민은 앞으로 더욱 깊어질 것 같다.
Every June, Lions Clubs and Rotary Clubs begin a new administrative year
by electing new presidents and officers.
These organizations once played a significant role as international service organizations,
especially in the era before the Internet.
Today, however, I often feel that many of them have become little more than social gatherings.
There are, of course, clubs that continue to make meaningful contributions
through community service. In reality, however,
many members simply pay their dues without actively participating.
In today's world, work and personal responsibilities naturally take priority.
As for myself, I have currently stepped away from Lions Club activities.
I had considered helping establish a new club,
but the final discussions did not lead to an agreement.
For now, I maintain only my Rotary Club membership.
Next year will mark my 30th year as a Rotarian,
but the milestone itself does not carry any special meaning for me.
Over the years, the atmosphere within these clubs has also changed.
The membership has become increasingly older,
making it difficult to attract younger generations.
As a result, much of the energy and enjoyment that
once characterized these organizations has gradually faded.
This raises an important question:
Do traditional social clubs still play the same role they once did,
Or is it time to embrace new forms of networking and community service?
Increasingly, I find myself wondering whether the time
and financial commitment required still provide enough value
and meaning in today's society.
毎年6月になると、ライオンズクラブとロータリークラブでは新しい会長や役員が選出され、
新年度が始まる。インターネットが普及していなかった時代、
これらの団体は国際的な奉仕団体として大きな役割を果たしていた。
しかし現在では、その存在意義は以前ほど大きくなく、
単なる親睦団体のように感じられることも少なくない。
もちろん、今でも地域社会や国際社会への奉仕活動に
積極的に取り組んでいるクラブは数多く存在する。
しかし現実には、会費だけを納め、活動にはほとんど参加しない会員も少なくない。
現代では、仕事や家庭など、それぞれの生活が優先されるのは自然なことである。
私自身も現在はライオンズクラブでの活動を休んでいる。
新しいクラブの設立にも関わったが、最終的な合意には至らなかったため、
現在はロータリークラブの会員資格だけを維持している。
来年でロータリー入会30年を迎えるが、
その数字自体に特別な意味を感じているわけではない。
年月とともにクラブの雰囲気も大きく変わった。
会員の高齢化が進み、若い世代の参加も容易ではない。
その結果、かつて感じていた活気や楽しさも次第に薄れてきたように思う。
果たして、伝統的なソーシャルクラブは今の時代にも以前と
同じ役割を果たすべきなのだろうか。
それとも、新しいネットワークや奉仕活動の形へと変化していくべきなのだろうか。
時間と費用をかけるだけの価値や意義が、
以前ほど感じられなくなっていることを、最近ますます考えるようになった。
