Jealousy or Caution?
Competing Narratives in Human Relationships
At a local club in Malta,
I encountered a situation that quietly revealed
how differently the same individual can be interpreted depending
on one’s social and psychological frame of reference.
The man in question is a 79-year-old architect of considerable professional standing.
Still active in his field, financially independent, and socially engaged,
he presented himself as someone who continues to lead a dynamic later life.
He spoke of past relationships with women of similar or
younger age during his earlier years at the club,
and suggested that current criticism directed at him was driven by “jealousy.”
Yet another perspective offered a starkly different interpretation.
A female academic, observing the same individual,
raised concerns not in terms of personal judgment,
but through structural considerations: age-related power asymmetry,
potential alcohol-related issues, and a recurring relational pattern that may warrant caution.
What is striking is not merely the difference in opinion,
but the underlying cognitive frameworks that produce such divergence.
One narrative reduces criticism to emotional motivation—jealousy—
thereby reframing external evaluation as a projection of others’ insecurity.
The other situates the same behaviour
within broader social and behavioural risk patterns.
From a social-psychological standpoint,
the former may be understood as a form of self-serving attribution bias,
where negative feedback is externalized to protect self-concept.
The latter, by contrast, reflects a preventive interpretive framework grounded
in observed behavioural regularities,
particularly in contexts marked by significant differences in age, status, or influence.
The central issue, however, is not which interpretation is definitively correct.
Rather, it is the recognition that social reality is not simply observed—
it is interpreted through competing narrative structures.
The same actions may be reframed as “jealousy” in one discourse and “caution” in another.
Ultimately, what we often confront in human relationships is not only behaviour itself,
but the struggle over meaning: who has the authority to define what that behaviour signifies.
