Party Leader Chung Cheong-rae Emphasizes Peace at <Turbulent 2026: Iran War, North Korea-China Summit, and the Korean Peninsula>

“There is no separate path to peace; peace is the path itself.”

Break News, Political Reporter Kim Chung-yeol = An emergency forum on international affairs was held on June 22 at the Party Leaders' Conference Room in the main building of the National Assembly under the theme of <Turbulent 2026: Iran War, North Korea-China Summit, and the Korean Peninsula>. On this day, Democratic Party of Korea Leader Chung Cheong-rae repeatedly emphasized the importance of peace on the Korean Peninsula in his opening remarks.

Recalling that he has had a deep interest in inter-Korean relations and peace issues since his college days, Leader Chung reflected on the historical moments over the past 40 years in which inter-Korean relations have repeatedly opened and closed. Pointing out major moments such as U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's visit to Pyongyang in 2000, the launch of the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Kumgang tourism, the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration, and the September 19 Military Agreement, he expressed his regret, stating, "While there were countless hopes and aspirations, severance and frustration were also repeated."

In particular, Representative Jeong expressed his sorrow by quoting President Kim Dae-jung, who said, "If Al Gore had become president, what would have happened to peace on the Korean Peninsula, inter-Korean relations, and U.S.-North Korea relations? The more I think about it, the more it is a deep regret, and we are a truly unfortunate nation." He also emphasized the importance of inter-Korean exchange, evaluating the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Kumgang tourism as "war speed bumps."

He stated, “When the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Mount Kumgang tourism began, I visited the complex several times and also went to Mount Kumgang. Furthermore, the KBS Open Concert commemorating the milestone of one million tourists visiting Mount Kumgang was held there.” Recalling the moment the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Mount Kumgang were closed, he mentioned, “When asked why people did not hoard ramen during the first North Korean nuclear crisis, President Kim Dae-jung replied, ‘Because the South and North were exchanging and meeting with each other, there was no such danger.’”

Referring to President Lee Jae-myung’s recent European tour, visit to the Vatican, and dinner conversation with U.S. President Trump, Representative Jeong remarked, “Peace on the Korean Peninsula may come more suddenly than we think.” Emphasizing the need for preparation, he defined the issue of peace as a core task directly linked to the nation's destiny, stating, "Peace is economy, and if peace is shaken, the Republic of Korea itself could be shaken."

Finally, he urged, "Our wish is unification, but our true wish is peace," adding, "I hope today's forum serves as a venue for preparation and reflection for peace on the Korean Peninsula."

Currently, inter-Korean relations are at a standstill due to North Korea's "two-state hostile" stance and its refusal to denuclearize. What should be done to resolve inter-Korean issues? The common view among experts is that the solution requires tension management and a phased approach in the short term, and the restoration of trust through international cooperation and selective exchanges in the mid-to-long term.

For the time being, inter-Korean relations must inevitably focus on tension management and limited exchanges rather than a complete breakthrough. In the short term, the key lies in nuclear freeze negotiations and the prevention of military conflict, while in the mid-to-long term, wouldn't the strategy be to build trust by expanding selective exchanges at the level of international cooperation and civilian exchanges? hpf21@naver.com
