Author Lee Sang-hoon Publishes Historical Novel "The Silk Letter"... "A Biography of Hwang Sa-yeong, Martyred in 1801"
Recommendation by Archbishop Peter Jeong Sun-taek (Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul): "The Silk Letter contains the fervent solidarity of faith and the poignant narrative of sacrifice."
- Reporter Park Jeong-dae
Author Lee Sang-hoon's historical novel "The Silk Letter" (Subtitle: A Letter Arriving After 125 Years) has been published (Book Masil).
In its introduction to the book, Chaekmasil Publishing House explained, “After the death of King Jeongjo, the Joseon government, which was seized by Queen Jeongsun and the Noron Byeokpa faction, used the persecution of Catholicism to eliminate the Noron Sipa and Namin forces, starting with the Sinyu Persecution of 1801. While hundreds of Catholics were executed during this persecution, the forces targeted by the Byeokpa were virtually annihilated, with only a few, such as Jeong Yak-jeon and Jeong Yak-yong, barely surviving.” The book continued, “Amidst these horrific events, Jeong Yak-yong’s nephew-in-law, Hwang Sa-yeong, hid in a cave in Baeron Village and attempted to send a long letter addressed to the Pope to the Diocese of Beijing, but failed, and the letter was confiscated by the Uigeumbu (Royal Court of Justice). Consequently, the persecution of Catholicism intensified, and the remaining believers hid deep in remote areas to keep the Catholic faith alive. This novel is the first work to dramatize this process and the intimate circumstances surrounding it, and it is a masterpiece that took several years from conception to writing.” He continued, “Hwang Sa-yeong, who was martyred in 1801, has long been a hot potato not only in the Catholic world but also in general history. This is due to the 'White Paper' he wrote—that is, the letter he wrote to the Pope. What contents were contained in the White Paper that Hwang Sa-yeong has yet to be canonized amidst conflicting evaluations? Lee Sang-hoon’s novel *White Paper* finds its conceptual framework starting from this question. Therefore, this work can be considered an answer to that question. So, what content was contained in Hwang Sa-yeong’s letter, the White Paper? In the White Paper, Hwang Sa-yeong briefly explained the situation of the Joseon Church and the persecution since 1785 (the 9th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), recorded the detailed unfolding of the Shinyu Persecution, and outlined the brief biographies of the martyrs. After testifying about the activities and death of Father Ju Mun-mo, he concluded by mentioning measures to rebuild the ruined Joseon Church and guarantee freedom of faith. It is precisely these measures that become controversial. Whether to petition the Emperor of the suzerain state, the Qing, to force Joseon to accept Western missionaries, or to incorporate Joseon as a province of the Qing for supervision, or, failing that, to send hundreds of Western ships and tens of thousands of troops. "He proposed measures such as sending a Ming Dynasty to force the Joseon court to submit and allow freedom of religion," the text states. "Upon encountering these contents in the confiscated White Paper, the regime of Queen Jeongsun immediately executed those involved and further intensified the persecution of Catholics. Amidst this, fearing that a copy of the White Paper would be delivered to China and reveal the execution of Father Ju Mun-mo, the envoy dispatched in October of that year was also appointed as the Envoy for Presenting Memorials. He was instructed to submit a drastically shortened version of the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper—16 lines and 922 characters—to the Qing Ministry of Rites, along with a Memorial to Suppress Heresy explaining the legitimacy of the Sinyu Persecution. This is the so-called 'Falsified White Paper.' In this document, content regarding China was omitted, and only the fact of requesting the dispatch of Western troops was recorded to assert the legitimacy of the persecution." The original Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper had been kept in the Uigeumbu (Royal Court of Justice) since its confiscation in 1801, until after the Gabo Reform of 1894, the old "Bishop Mutel, the diocesan bishop at the time, happened to acquire the document when it was being destroyed. Consequently, it was presented to the Pope in Rome during the beatification ceremony of the 79 Korean Blessed Martyrs in 1925 and is currently preserved at the Vatican Museum of Ethnography," he stated.
Hwang Sa-yeong's deep and lofty piety, having received the baptism of faith from Gwangam Yi Byeok, was passed down to his wife, Maria Jeong Myeong-ryeon, and his cousin-in-law, Baro Jeong Ha-sang, becoming the seed of revival for Korean Catholicism, which had been on the brink of collapse due to severe persecution. The author reinterpreted and gained insight into the meaning of the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper within this context, unfolding it into a novel.
By incorporating the insight—based on undeniable facts and historical background—that the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper must not be distorted through the lens of the 'Fake White Paper,' which was maliciously edited by the Joseon government at the time, the author revives the true value and significance of the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper for the present day. **Recommendations from Key Figures**
▲ Archbishop Peter Jeong Sun-taek (Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul) = *The White Paper* contains a poignant narrative of sacrifice and a fervent solidarity of faith that yearns for God's love to live a humane life and seeks to spread that love far and wide to the world. I pray that God's grace be with this work, which captures the beginning of the Korean Catholic Gospel with utmost devotion. ▲Father Joseph Lee Young-je (Director of Planning for the 2027 WYD): The countless young pilgrims participating in the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day will discover and reflect upon the faith of the Korean martyr saints. I pray that through this book, Korean youth will realize our precious history of martyrdom, and that young people from around the world participating in the Day will share the noble lives of these martyr saints.
▲Kim Jin-taek Thomas Aquinas (President of the Council of Lay Apostolate Organizations of the Catholic Church in Korea): *The White Paper* covers the history of the genesis of Korean Catholicism, which sprouted through martyrdom. The holy journey of the youth of Joseon, who stood at the center of this history, is expected to provide deep resonance and inspiration to the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day. This work conveys a powerful message that "K-Catholicism," which began as an indigenous faith community unprecedented in world history, will become the spark that shakes the world's youth and the Church. Above all, the re-evaluation of Hwang Sa-yeong and the letter he wrote, *The White Paper*, stands out. Below are the key excerpts from the text.
Key Points from the Text
◯… I read it again, feeling in my heart the sentiments of Hwang Sa-yeong as he wrote the White Paper. I became Hwang Sa-yeong, and Hwang Sa-yeong became me. It felt as though Hwang Sa-yeong, who lived 239 years ago, was coming back to life within me. Although Hwang Sa-yeong was a Catholic martyr who willingly chose the path of martyrdom—where his limbs were torn apart for God—he was not treated with respect by the Catholic Church and became a figure abandoned by our history. Was his act of writing and sending a letter to the Pope, asking him to put an end to the mad dance of slaughter taking place in Joseon even if it meant mobilizing foreign troops, truly an act to be condemned as treason? If one knew the lives of the Joseon people, the political situation at the time, and the reality of the Catholic persecution, who could cast a stone at Hwang Sa-yeong? (▶ Page 6, from <Author's Note>)
◯… Although Jin-bok could not become a priest, he could never deny God in his heart. It was as if the spirit of his great-great-grandfather was following him. Whenever Jinbok faced hardship, he would visit Myeongdong Cathedral, where Myeongnyeobang was located, to search for traces of his grandfather. At the time, believers moved their gathering place to the house of Kim Beom-u in Myeongnyeobang to evade pursuit by the royal court. It was there that the seeds of the Joseon Catholic Church sprouted. The key figures of that Myeongnyeobang gathering were Yi Byeok, Yi Seung-hun, and Jeong Yak-yong. As a historian, Jinbok had a keen interest in Jeong Yak-yong's family, which was inextricably linked to Catholicism like a fence of inseparable bonds. The figure who became the starting point of Joseon Catholicism by being the first in Korea to accept Catholicism as a religion rather than an academic discipline was Gwangam Yi Byeok. He was related to Jeong Yak-yong's family through marriage, as Yi Byeok's sister became the wife of Jeong Yak-hyeon, Jeong Yak-yong's eldest brother. Furthermore, Jeong Myeong-ryeon, the daughter of Jeong Yak-hyeon, married Hwang Sa-yeong, making Hwang Sa-yeong a son-in-law of the Jeong family; and Yi Seung-hun, the first person baptized in Korea, married Jeong Yak-yong's sister, making Jeong Yak-yong and Yi Seung-hun brothers-in-law. Yun Ji-chung, the first martyr, was Jeong Yak-yong's maternal cousin, and his younger brother, Jeong Yak-jong, and his son, Jeong Cheol-sang, played pivotal roles in the Catholic Church before being martyred; Jeong Yak-jong's youngest son, Jeong Ha-sang, was designated as a patron saint of the Korean Catholic Church alongside Father Kim Dae-geon. Seen in this light, Korean Catholicism owes a great debt to the Jeong family. Jin-bok felt a deep sense of guilt for not being able to become a priest himself, which overlapped with the thought of Jeong Yak-yong apostatizing from Catholicism, leaving a profound emotional resonance in his heart. The contrasting faces of Jeong Yak-yong, who preserved his life through apostasy, and Hwang Sa-yeong, who maintained his faith to the end and was executed by dismemberment in the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper Incident, flickered before Jin-bok's eyes. (▶ Page 13, from <The Mystery of Hwang Sa-yeong’s Silk Letter>)
◯… The group gathered at Cheonjinam initially focused on Western thought and technology. While studying Western scholarship, Yi Byeok placed particular emphasis on the doctrines of Catholicism. The Catholic study groups led by Yi Byeok were gradually developing into a religious faith. Silhak scholars transcribed and shared the *Cheonju Silui*, elevating Catholicism from a field of study to a faith. This marked the beginning of the first Korean Catholic faith. It was the start of a voluntary faith unprecedented in the world. The first Catholicism in Korea began in 1777 when Yi Byeok, Kwon Cheol-sin, Jeong Yak-jeon, Jeong Yak-yong, Yi Seung-hun, and others gathered at Cheonjinam, an hermitage attached to Ju-eo Temple in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, to study Western scholarship, including Catholicism.
(▶ Page 25, from <Yi Byeok, Who Sowed the Seeds of Joseon Catholicism>)
◯… Although Hwang Sa-yeong died when Jeong Ha-sang was seven years old, Jeong Ha-sang clearly remembered his cousin-in-law, Hwang Sa-yeong. When Jeong Ha-sang sought to revive Catholicism in Joseon to carry on his father’s will, the first person who came to mind was Hwang Sa-yeong. Ha-sang searched for the White Letter Hwang Sa-yeong had sent to the Pope, but he could not find it anywhere. For the Joseon Catholic Church, which had struggled to find a catalyst for revival since the Shinyu Persecution of 1801, he decided to find scattered believers to reignite the flame of faith and organize the religious lives of the faithful, while continuing to send letters to the Bishop of Beijing to request the dispatch of clergy to the Joseon Catholic Church once again. (▶ p. 214, from <Jeong Ha-sang, Carrying on Hwang Sa-yeong’s Will>)
◯… It was 1838, and thirty-eight years had passed since Myeong-ryeon arrived in Jeju. Her once beautiful hands were now blistered and calloused, looking exactly like the hands of a slave. Myeong-ryeon's hair had turned white with frost. As she neared sixty, the people of Jeju began to call her "Hanyang Halmang" (Grandmother of Hanyang). Thanks to the consideration of the Magistrate of Daejeong, who was leaving for Hanyang, Myeong-ryeon was recognized as an independent slave living on her own. She lived alone in a thatched house and continued her missionary work. The words of the Bible, delivered from Myeong-ryeon's secluded home, were quietly seeping into the hearts of widows who had lost their husbands at sea and the islanders who had lost hope, much like water seeping into a dry towel. Myeong-ryeon's friend, Gannani, worked very diligently in her missionary activities, and the number of believers following Myeong-ryeon reached over two hundred. (▶ Page 259, from <Jeong Myeong-ryeon Meets Her Son, Hwang Gyeong-han>)
◯… There was a ceaseless stream of visitors to Hwang Sa-yeong's grave. The Songchu Catholic Church of the Uijeongbu Diocese managed Hwang Sa-yeong's grave, erecting the Stations of the Cross around the tomb and building a small chapel next to it. Jin-bok stood before Hwang Sa-yeong's grave, and as if knowing his feelings, rain began to fall. In front of Hwang Sa-yeong's grave, a small area had been set up for praying the Stations of the Cross. Believers were praying the Stations of the Cross before Hwang Sa-yeong's tomb. Hwang Sa-yeong's path was the Stations of the Cross. Jin-bok bowed his head and prayed before the tomb. Hwang Sa-yeong's death was not in vain. His blood was passed down to his descendants, creating the country of today. The church of our nation, built upon the blood of our martyrs, has become the foundation of the Republic of Korea's success through the cross of faith in Jesus—regardless of whether Catholic or Protestant—to an extent that the world envies. Everyone speaks of the Republic of Korea as the "Miracle on the Han River," but it was a miracle of the blood shed by martyrs.
