필자는 인류 역사 가운데, 일찍이 경험해보지 않은 시대, 첨단 시대를 살아온 듯합니다. 1952년생이니, 연필과 볼펜으로 문자 활동을 하던 시대에 태어났습니다. 이어 타자기로 문자 활동을 했었습니다. 현재는 컴퓨터를 활용하는 인터넷 시대-인공지능 시대를 살아가고 있습니다. 특히 인터넷 언론사인 브레이크뉴스의 사주(오너)이니, 3-차 산업혁명 시대의 맨 앞, 선두에서 살아온 듯합니다.
그간, 1-2차 산업혁명은 기름과 전기가 이끌었었습니다. 그런데 인터넷-인공지능이 이끄는 3-4차 혁명, 이런 산업 혁명이 촉발돼 하루가 다르게 발전-진행 중입니다. 어찌나 빠르게 진전되는지, 눈알이 핑핑 돌 지경입니다. 그러하니, 미래의 방향이 어디일지? 매우 궁금해집니다.

인터넷이 정보의 고속도로를 뚫은 것이 3차 산업혁명이라고 정의됩니다. 이어 인공지능(AI)이 그 도로 위에서 스스로 생각하는 뇌를 얹은 4차 산업혁명이라고 합니다. 이 혁명이 급속하게 진행 중입니다. 그 미래의 방향은 온라인의 AI가 현실 세계의 모든 사물, 인체, 그리고 우주 공간과 완벽하게 결합하는 '초연결·초지능 가상물리 융합 시대'로 나아갈 것입니다.
지금까지의 AI가 모니터 화면 속에서 텍스트나 이미지로 우리를 도왔다면, 미래에는 현실의 물리적 실체와 뇌(AI)가 하나로 합쳐지는 시대가 됩니다. 미래의 주요 방향은 어떠할까요?
가상과 현실의 경계가 붕괴(가상물리 시스템, CPS)되고 있습니다. 현실의 공장, 도시, 심지어 사람의 장기까지 똑같이 복제한 '디지털 쌍둥이'를 가상공간에 만들고 있습니다. 가상에서 미리 재난, 수술, 교통 체증을 실험하고 완벽한 해결책을 찾아낸 뒤 현실에 그대로 적용합니다. VR·AR을 넘어 메타버스와 현실이 실시간으로 상호작용하며 시공간의 제약이 완전히 사라집니다.
모든 사물의 생명화(사물 인터넷과 로봇의 진화)가 이뤄지고 있습니다. 소위 만물지능 인터넷(AIoT)이 가동되고 있습니다. 가전제품, 자동차, 건물 등 단순 연결에 그쳤던 사물 인터넷(IoT)이 스스로 판단하고 진화하는 사물지능으로 변화하고 있습니다. AI가 탑재된 휴머노이드 로봇과 자율주행차가 인간의 노동과 이동을 완전히 대신하기 시작했습니다. 집이나 사무실이 사용자의 바이오 데이터와 기분을 실시간으로 읽어 알아서 온도를 바꾸고 최적의 환경을 제공하고 있습니다.

바이오·생명공학이 뇌로 연결(인간의 확장)되고 있습니다. AI 기술이 디지털 영역에만 머물지 않고 인간의 유전자, 나노기술과 결합 중입니다. 마우스나 키보드 없이 생각만으로 기기를 제어하고, 반대로 뇌에 필요한 지식을 바로 다운로드하는 기술이 현실화되고 있습니다. 유전자 염기서열 분석과 AI 예측을 통해 질병이 생기기 수년 전에 예방하고 치료하는 맞춤형 생명 연장이 가능해지고 있습니다.
일자리와 인간 삶이 재정립 되는 중입니다. 과거에는 육체노동이 기계로 대체되었습니다. 그런데 지금은 법률, 의료, 금융 등 전문 지식 영역까지 AI가 인간을 능가하거나 보조하고 있습니다. 인간은 복잡한 계산이나 데이터 분석 대신, AI를 지휘하는 기획력, 윤리적 판단력, 인간적인 공감 능력을 발휘하는 일에 집중하고 있는 중입니다.
여기에서 중요한 사실은 사람이 발전시킨 첨단 기기들이 정보를 장악-주도하는 첨단 방법이 개발-활용되고 있지만, 그 주체는 사람이라는 사실입니다. 오직 사람이 첨단 기기를 부려 먹는 주인이라는 것입니다. 모든 사람, 내가 곧 우주의 주인이십니다.
