‘실험수필’을 통해 수필의 영토를 확장해 온 소국(素菊) 오차숙 작가가 고향 제주의 세밀한 풍경과 생의 날숨을 담은 새 수필집 “탐라, 그 숨비소리(문학관 출판사)”를 출간했다.
문학관 출판사측은 보도자료에서 “이 신간은 제주 전체를 조망하는 거대 담론에서 벗어나, 작가가 유년 시절을 보낸 성산읍 ‘오조리’라는 작은 마을의 공기와 냄새, 그리고 그 바다를 온몸으로 겪어낸 해녀 어머니의 고단한 삶 등 철저히 개인적인 경험과 기억의 궤적을 쫓는다”면서 “작가는 나의 한정된 경험이 자칫 제주의 전체 모습으로 비치지 않기를 바란다라며 이 책이 자신의 문학적 고향이자 실제 고향인 오조리에 바치는 내밀한 헌사”임을 밝혔다.
이 책은 총 4부로 구성됐다. 제주의 원시적 생명력부터 시대의 아픔까지 폭넓게 아우른다. ▲제1부에서는 제주의 영과 육을 키워낸 설문대할망의 신화와 원시적 생명력을 형상화했으며, ▲제2부에서는 침묵하는 바다와 해녀들의 삶, 그 속에 깃든 ‘이어도’의 꿈을 그렸다. 이어 ▲제3부에서는 오조리의 풍경과 교육자였던 아버지, 그리고 4·3 사건이라는 시대의 비극을 진솔한 서사로 짚어냈고, ▲제4부에서는 제주 민요 가락 속에 녹아 있는 무의식을 라캉의 정신분석학적 시선으로 토닥이며 제주인으로서 잊지 말아야 할 정신을 담아냈다.

문학관 출판사측은 “이 수필집은 평소 정형화된 틀을 깨고 아방가르드한 파격을 시도해 온 오 작가의 문학적 실험이 돋보인다. 얼마 전 타계한 문학의 스승 운정(雲亭) 윤재천 선생의 ‘수필은 인간학’이라는 유훈을 받들어, 기교보다는 삶의 본질을 해부하는 데 집중했다. 무엇보다 고향을 향해 쓴 시를 먼저 제시하고 이를 산문으로 풀어내는 ‘시가 있는 수필’이라는 독창적인 기법을 도입해, 생의 현장에서 길어 올린 날것의 숨결을 그대로 살려냈다.”고 소개했다.

Author Oh Cha-sook Publishes New Essay Collection “Tamra, That Breath of Life”

Author Oh Cha-sook (pen name Soguk), who has expanded the territory of the essay through ‘experimental essays,’ has published a new essay collection titled “Tamra, That Breath of Life” (Munhakgwan Publishing), which captures the detailed landscapes of her hometown Jeju and the exhalations of life.
In a press release, Munhakgwan Publishing stated, “This new book departs from grand discourses that survey the entirety of Jeju, instead tracing the trajectory of thoroughly personal experiences and memories, such as the air and smells of the small village of ‘Ojo-ri’ in Seongsan-eup where the author spent her childhood, and the arduous life of a Haenyeo mother who experienced that sea with her whole body.” The publisher further revealed, “The author hopes that her limited experiences will not inadvertently be perceived as the entirety of Jeju, and this book is an intimate tribute to Ojo-ri, her actual hometown as well as her literary one.”
This book is composed of four parts. It broadly encompasses everything from Jeju's primitive vitality to the pain of the times. Part 1 embodies the myth of Seolmundae Halmang, who nurtured Jeju's spirit and body, and her primitive life force; Part 2 depicts the silent sea, the lives of the Haenyeo, and the dream of 'Ieodo' embedded within them. Furthermore, Part 3 explores the landscapes of Ojo-ri, the author's father who was an educator, and the tragedy of the era known as the Jeju 4·3 Incident through a sincere narrative; and Part 4 captures the spirit that Jeju people must never forget, soothing the unconscious embedded in the melodies of Jeju folk songs through the lens of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The Munhakgwan Publishing House introduced the book, stating, “This essay collection highlights the literary experimentation of author Oh, who has consistently broken conventional molds and attempted avant-garde unconventional approaches. Following the dying wish of her literary mentor, Unjeong Yun Jae-cheon—that ‘essays are the study of humanity’—she focused on dissecting the essence of life rather than technical skill.
