특히 춘천·철원·화천·양구(을) 선거구는 국민의힘 차기 주자들의 이름이 하나둘 거론되며 '포스트 지방선거' 최대 관심지역으로 떠오르고 있다.
이번 지방선거를 거치며 국민의힘 내부에서는 "이제는 총선을 준비해야 한다"는 목소리가 커지고 있다. 선거는 끝났지만 정치인들의 시간은 멈추지 않는다. 지역을 누비며 민심을 다지고 조직을 정비하는 물밑 경쟁은 이미 시작됐다는 평가다.
무엇보다 관심을 받는 인물은 변지량 전 강원도민복지특별자문관이다. 화천 출신인 변 전 자문관은 춘천을 중심으로 지역사회 활동을 이어오며 보수 시민사회와의 접점을 넓혀 왔다. 특히 이번 지방선거에서도 당을 위한 지원 활동과 조직 결집에 적극 나섰다는 평가를 받으며 정치적 존재감을 키웠다. 지역에서는 "당이 어려울 때 함께 뛰었다"는 점을 변 전 자문관의 강점으로 보는 시각도 있다.
현역인 한기호 의원은 풍부한 의정 경험과 탄탄한 조직력을 갖춘 중진이다. 다만 일각에서는 차기 총선을 앞두고 세대교체와 새로운 리더십을 요구하는 목소리도 제기되고 있어 향후 공천 과정에서 어떤 선택이 이뤄질지 관심이 모인다.
