President Lee Jae-myung Severely Criticizes Unfair Treatment of Employees Returning from Parental Leave... IKEA Vows "Sincere Cooperation with Investigation"
On the 10th, President Lee Jae-myung ordered a thorough investigation and strict response regarding allegations of unfair treatment of employees returning from parental leave at IKEA Korea.
Sharing a related article on his X (formerly Twitter) account that day, President Lee stated, "If the allegations are proven true through a thorough investigation, we will take strict measures in accordance with international standards."
President Lee remarked, "There were once instances where exemplary global companies in other countries were criticized for anti-labor and opaque management practices only in Korea." He added, "Now that the Republic of Korea is being reborn as a model society and government leading the world, such management behavior cannot be tolerated."
He further emphasized, "Just as our companies must not display anti-labor behavior overseas, foreign companies must also adhere to the same standards domestically."
Previous reports raised allegations that IKEA Korea notified an executive-level employee returning from parental leave of a demotion to a regular employee and pressured them to resign. The Anyang branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor has been investigating IKEA Korea CEO Isabel Púcci since April regarding allegations of violating the Equal Employment Opportunity Act.
In response, IKEA Korea stated in an official statement, "We take the concerns recently raised very seriously and are faithfully cooperating with the relevant authorities' investigation."
The company further explained, "We will faithfully provide necessary materials and explanations so that objective facts can be verified," adding, "We are concerned about the situation where unverified claims are repeatedly reported as facts, causing unnecessary misunderstanding and damage to our employees and the company."
In addition, the company stated, "We respect the relevant laws and regulations of the Republic of Korea and operate in a way that allows all employees to confidently use their legally guaranteed rights, such as leave for pregnancy, childbirth, and parental care." It further noted, "Over the past year, 118 out of approximately 2,000 employees took parental leave, and 110 of them (93%) have returned to work."
The company added, "We will continue to strive to create a work environment where all members are respected and can work fairly, regardless of their family circumstances."
