일출과 일몰을 한곳에서 감상할 수 있는 충남 당진의 대표 휴양지 왜목마을에 새로운 관광 랜드마크가 들어섰다.
충남 당진시는 지난 11일 석문면 교로리 왜목마을 관광지 현장에서 ‘왜목마을 선셋전망대 준공식’을 성황리에 마치고 본격적인 일반 개방에 들어갔다고 13일 밝혔다.
이번에 베일을 벗은 선셋전망대는 지난 2023년 국토교통부가 주관한 서해안권발전종합계획의 ‘서해안 관광도로 조성사업’ 공모에 당진시가 최종 선정되면서 추진된 결실이다. 국비 10억 원과 시비 10억 원 등 총 20억 원의 재원이 전격 투입됐다.
당진시는 2023년 12월 첫 밑그림을 그리는 기본구상 용역에 착수한 이래, 2024년 4월 ‘왜목마을에 불어오는 바람’ 역동적인 이미지를 형상화한 독창적인 구조물 디자인을 확정했다. 이어 지난해 3월 첫 삽을 뜬 이후, 단 한 건의 안전사고 발생 없이 지난 6월 완벽하게 건축 공사를 마무리했다.
새롭게 조성된 선셋전망대는 높이 약 17m에 연면적 152㎡(약 46평) 크기로 세워졌다. 전망대 내부 상층부에는 방문객들이 왜목마을의 수려한 리아스식 해안선과 서해 절경을 탁 트인 시야로 내려다볼 수 있도록 계단형 조망 공간을 설계했다.
하층부에는 피서객들이 뜨거운 햇볕을 피해 편안하게 머무를 수 있는 쾌적한 휴게 쉼터가 조성됐다.
특히 야간 볼거리도 대폭 강화했다. 건물 외벽 전체에 조명을 스크린처럼 활용해 시각적 영상을 구현하는 ‘미디어파사드’ 시스템을 도입, 밤마다 서해바다를 배경으로 화려하고 다채로운 빛의 파노라마를 연출하며 야간 관광객들의 발길을 붙잡을 전망이다.
김기재 당진시장은 준공식에서 “선셋전망대가 왜목마을의 매력을 한 단계 높여줄 것으로 기대하며, 앞으로도 당진시가 가진 풍부한 해양 관광 자원을 지속해서 발굴·다각화해 서해안 중심 관광도시로 도약하겠다”고 말했다.
