브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 대법원은 권성동 국민의힘 의원이 통일교 측으로부터 불법 정치자금을 수수한 혐의에 대해 징역 2년의 실형을 선고했다.
대법원 2부(주심 엄상필 대법관)는 16일 정치자금법 위반 혐의로 기소된 권 의원의 상고를 기각하고 징역 2년과 추징금 1억원을 선고한 원심을 확정했다.
권 의원은 2022년 1월 서울 여의도의 한 중식당에서 윤영호 전 통일교 세계본부장으로부터 교단 관련 사업 지원을 청탁받고 정치자금 1억원을 수수한 혐의로 김건희 특별검사팀에 의해 기소됐다.
특검은 권 의원이 이후 한학자 통일교 총재를 만나고 윤석열 당시 대통령 당선인과의 접견을 주선했으며, 통일교 측이 요청한 일부 사업 예산이 편성되는 등 청탁이 실현된 정황이 있다고 판단했다.
권 의원은 혐의를 전면 부인했지만, 법원은 윤 전 본부장의 다이어리 기록과 현금이 담긴 가방 사진 등 증거를 토대로 유죄를 인정했다.
1심 재판부는 "법률 전문가임에도 범행을 부인하며 반성하지 않았다"고 지적했고, 2심은 "정치권력과 특정 종교의 유착 위험을 초래해 대의민주주의와 정교분리 원칙을 침해한 중대한 범죄"라고 판단했다.
대법원도 원심 판단에 법리 오해가 없다고 보고 형을 확정했다.
앞서 대법원은 지난 9일 윤 전 본부장에게도 권 의원에게 정치자금 1억원을 건넨 혐의 등을 인정해 징역 1년 6개월의 실형을 확정한 바 있다.
권 의원은 실형이 확정되며 국회의원직도 상실됐다. 이에 따라 공석이 된 강원 강릉시 지역구는 2027년 4월 7일 보궐선거가 치러질 전망이다.
한편 권 의원은 판결 직후 자신의 페이스북을 통해 "정치 보복이 저 하나로 마무리되길 바란다"며 "정적을 꺾는 일이 정치의 목적이 되어서는 안 된다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "국가기관이 동원되고 법과 제도가 흔들리는 일은 멈춰야 한다"면서 "이제 공직에서는 물러나지만 국민과 강릉, 국민의힘을 향한 마음은 변하지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.

The Supreme Court has sentenced People Power Party lawmaker Kwon Seong-dong to two years in prison for charges of accepting illegal political funds from the Unification Church.

The first-instance court pointed out that "despite being a legal expert, he denied the crime and showed no remorse," while the second-instance court ruled that it was "a serious crime that violated representative democracy and the principle of separation of church and state by creating a risk of collusion between political power and a specific religion."
The Supreme Court also confirmed the sentence, finding no misinterpretation of the law in the lower court's judgment.
