[Sri Lanka Report] Trincomalee’s ‘Pigeon Island’... A Raw, Hidden Gem
- Author Jo Seok-yong
Where in Sri Lanka can one enjoy unprocessed, raw peace? I would unhesitatingly choose Trincomalee, located in the east. Among its attractions, ‘Pigeon Island’ is the heart of the place and deserves to be called a hidden gem. ‘Pigeon Island’ is a coral reef island, and true to its name, it is home to a large population of pigeons. It has been called this since the British colonial era. It is an uninhabited island that refuses human footsteps.
About 15km north of downtown Trincomalee is Nillavelly Beach, where you can take a private boat to reach the island. There isn't a proper dock. The boat is simply moored on the sandy beach, and after negotiating the fare with the passenger, the boat departs. Even upon arrival, you must simply splash your way ashore. You pay the national park entrance fee before boarding the boat. A small container serves as the ticket box, and staff are only on duty during the times when tourists visit the island.
It is the top snorkeling spot in Sri Lanka. You can easily spot baby sharks, sea turtles, and various tropical fish. The marine ecosystem, including coral reefs, is also perfectly preserved. It is the ultimate underwater paradise. European enthusiasts come here with their snorkeling gear; they make up the majority of visitors to the island. Hiring a snorkeling guide is recommended, as it helps locate the best spots.
However, it is still not quite suitable for all visitors. There are several reasons for this. First is the seasonal factor. Sri Lanka experiences the monsoon twice a year. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the direction of the massive winds changes twice. High inland mountain ranges block the wind, resulting in contrasting climates in the southwest and northeast. In other words, it is divided into the southwest monsoon (May–September) and the northeast monsoon (December–February).
Therefore, the best time for tourism in Trincomalee and Pigeon Island, which are part of the northeast monsoon, is from May to September. The weather is dry, and the sea waves are not high. This is very different from Colombo, which experiences a southwest monsoon. There is also a historical background. The decisive factor lies in the Sri Lankan Civil War (1983–2009). The strongholds of the Tamil rebels were Trincomalee in the east and Jaffna in the north. During the civil war, not only was development capital difficult to access, but even access for the general public was restricted. Even after the war ended, the region remained consistently marginalized from government-led development. Only recently has the government finally begun to show interest.
There is also the reason of its geographical distance from the capital, Colombo. From Bandaranaike International Airport, the southern coast is accessible within one to two hours via a highway. On the other hand, reaching Trincomalee requires driving inland for about six hours. The roads are also inconvenient, consisting of only two lanes.
Until now, Sri Lanka's tourism industry has been concentrated in the southwest. Consequently, an imbalance in infrastructure was inevitable. Foreign tourists also prefer the central and southern regions. They visit the central historical and cultural zones of Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy. Highland areas such as Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Haputale are also highly popular. The southern coastal region, including Galle and Matara, is teeming with famous tourist attractions.
In a sense, those who visit Trincomalee are people tired of the crowded tourist atmosphere of the southern coast. To get there, one must pass through Sigiriya or Anuradhapura. Once you leave this boundary of tourism, idyllic and beautiful scenery stretches out before you. People willingly endure the inconvenience to enjoy the happiness of encountering nature in its purest form.
Trincomale is predominantly Tamil Hindu. Since the majority of residents speak Tamil, Sinhala is not commonly spoken. There are also surprisingly many Moorish Muslims, who mainly reside on the outskirts of the city. As you travel, you can easily recognize that this is a Muslim region. There is a key course here that you must visit: Fort Frederick. Built during the Portuguese colonial period, it has undergone continuous transformation through the Dutch and British colonial eras. The Koneswaram Hindu Temple, situated in the columnar basalt formations, boasts a long history. At Lover’s Leap, where a British officer’s daughter is said to have jumped into the sea after a heartbreak, the waves at the bottom of the cliff are deep blue. Herds of free-range deer roam leisurely throughout the area.
A place where you can see Sri Lanka’s colonial history and religious background at a glance. Trincomalee is the place where you can admire untouched nature and enjoy activities as a bonus.
