세종시가 세수 감소 등에 따른 재정 여건 악화를 이유로 무상급식과 무상교복 등 주요 교육 지원 사업에 대한 전면 재검토에 나섰다. 다만 시는 세종시교육청과의 긴밀한 협의를 통해 잡음을 줄이고 합의안을 도출하겠다는 방침이다.
조상호 세종시장은 12일 시청 정음실에서 개최된 기자간담회에서 무상급식 및 교복 지원 사업의 축소·중단 가능성을 묻는 질의에 이 같은 시의 공식 입장을 전달했다.
세종시와 세종시교육청은 지난 2017년 합의를 거쳐 2018년부터 동 지역 초·중·고·특수학교 대상 전면 무상급식을 추진해 왔으며, 관련 예산은 양 기관이 50%씩 분담해 왔다. 무상교복과 통학차량 지원 역시 시의 지원액이 투입되는 대표적인 교육 복지 사업이다.
그러나 세수 감소로 인한 재정난이 가시화되면서 교육복지 사업 지속 여부에 경고등이 켜졌다.
앞서 강미애 세종시교육감은 기자간담회를 통해 "세수의 급감으로 시에서 지원하던 급식비와 교복비 지원이 난항을 겪고 있다는 소식을 접했다"며 "아무리 재정이 어렵더라도 교육 예산까지 동반 감축될 경우 안정적인 정책 추진이 어렵다"고 우려를 표명했다.

조 시장은 "교육감과 직접 진솔한 의견을 나누고 있으며 실무진 차원의 협의도 병행 중"이라며 "시의회에 예산안을 제출하기 전까지 양 기관이 수용할 수 있는 합의안을 도출하는 것이 목표"라고 덧붙였다.
구체적인 지원 축소 규모나 방식에 대해서는 "아직 교육청이라는 상대가 있는 만큼 확정된 바는 없다"며 협의를 통한 해결 의지를 재확인했다.
세종시와 교육청이 그동안 절반씩 부담해 온 무상급식 예산 분담 비율 조정 여부 등이 핵심 쟁점으로 떠오른 가운데, 양 기관이 내년도 예산안 편성 전까지 어떠한 타협점을 마련할지 관심이 집중되고 있다.
