Gokseong County Recruits Participants for ‘2nd Phase Children’s Health Steps’ to Prevent Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome

Providing Customized Integrated Health Management Support for Elementary Students Utilizing Designated Donations from the Hometown Love Donation System

(Gokseong = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gokseong County, part of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, is recruiting participants for the ‘2026 2nd Phase Gokseong Children’s Health Steps Project,’ which aims to help local elementary school students establish healthy lifestyle habits in conjunction with the Hometown Love Donation System’s designated donation project.

The ‘Gokseong Children’s Health Steps Project’ is a customized integrated health management program that provides comprehensive support in the fields of physical education, nutrition, psychology, and emotional well-being. Its purpose is to prevent and alleviate pediatric metabolic syndrome and obesity, which are on the rise due to recent changes in dietary habits and a lack of physical activity, and to help growing children form proper health habits on their own.

Gokseong County previously operated the 1st phase of the project from March to July, targeting 10 local elementary school students. Over a total of eight sessions, a diverse range of programs including customized physical activity, nutrition and dietary education, and emotional support were conducted. By combining pre- and post-program health status assessments, the program achieved tangible results in inducing practical improvements in the lifestyle habits of participating children.

The second phase of the project will be implemented with enhanced content, actively incorporating the operational achievements of the first phase as well as feedback from participants and their guardians. To ensure children maintain interest and participate continuously, the program will strengthen hands-on physical activities and practice-oriented nutrition education. Furthermore, specific guidelines will be provided to help children naturally practice proper eating and lifestyle habits in their daily lives.

The recruitment target for the second phase is elementary school students in grades 4 through 6 within Gokseong-gun whose Body Mass Index (BMI) falls within the 85th percentile or higher by gender and age. A maximum of 10 participants will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis. The recruitment period runs from August 12 to September 6, and households wishing to participate can easily apply online by scanning the QR code on the information poster. Selected students will participate in the program over a total of seven sessions from this coming September to December, utilizing Saturday mornings (09:30–12:00). The main training venues are specialized sports and cultural facilities within the county, such as the Gokseong Leisure & Culture Center and the Gokseong-gun Bandabi Sports Center.

A Gokseong-gun official stated, “Through the operation of the first phase, we confirmed positive changes in children, who took an interest in their health and voluntarily changed their lifestyle habits.” The official added, “We will operate the second phase of the project with substance so that children can accept health management as enjoyable play rather than boring education, and naturally put it into practice.”

The official continued, “The valuable donations sent from all over the country through the Hometown Love Donation System are bearing fruit as a foundation for the healthy growth of local children,” and added, “Moving forward, we will honor the donors' intentions and expand sustainable health promotion projects that provide tangible assistance to the local community.”
