Jeonnam Gwangju Special City, “Cool Down Sweat in the Heatwave with Refreshing Korean Rice Ice Cream”

1,000 Rice Products Delivered to Workers at Yeosu Industrial Complex in Celebration of the 12th Rice Day. Jointly Organized by Jeonnam Nonghyup and the Yeosu Industrial Complex Management Council… Campaign Launched to Promote Rice Consumption and Encourage On-site Workers

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Ahead of the 12th Rice Day (August 18), Jeonnam Gwangju Special City held a meaningful sharing event to support workers holding down industrial sites amidst the continuous heatwave, and to rediscover the value of Korean rice and revitalize its consumption.

Jeonnam Gwangju Special City announced on the 14th that it delivered 1,000 rice ice creams made with Korean rice to 1,000 workers at the Yeosu National Industrial Complex (hereinafter Yeosu Industrial Complex), in collaboration with Jeonnam Nonghyup and the Yeosu National Industrial Complex Management Council. This event was planned to reflect on the significance of ‘Rice Day’ on August 18 and to encourage the hard work of industrial complex workers who stand on the front lines of national industrial development while battling the extreme summer heat. August 18, Rice Day, is a commemorative day established to convey the meaning that "a farmer's touch is needed eighty-eight times to obtain a single grain of rice," as the Chinese character for rice (米) can be broken down into eight (八), ten (十), and eight (八).

On this day, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City delivered refreshing and nutritious rice ice cream to workers at tenant companies within the industrial complex through the Yeosu Industrial Complex Management Council. The delivered rice ice cream is a premium dessert made using domestically produced rice that captures both nutrition and taste, serving as a representative processed rice product that demonstrates the diversification of rice consumption patterns.

Following the delivery ceremony, officials visited the work sites of major tenant companies within the Yeosu Industrial Complex. While expressing gratitude by personally distributing rice ice cream to workers sweating in the sweltering heat, the city actively carried out public campaigns to promote rice consumption, such as the "Eat Breakfast Campaign," aimed at increasing rice consumption which has been declining due to changes in dietary habits.

A worker at an industrial complex who received the ice cream on-site shared their thoughts, saying, "Working in a heatwave where sweat flows even when standing still, tasting this cool and unique rice ice cream for a moment felt like my fatigue melted away." They added, "Since it is a dessert made from rice, it has a nutty flavor and is easy on the stomach, so I think I will be coming back often."

Taking this event as an opportunity, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to contribute to increasing farm income and stabilizing the rice supply by discovering and promoting various processed rice products (desserts, beverages, convenience foods, etc.) tailored to modern dietary habits, moving beyond consumption focused solely on rice for meals. Park Sang-mi, Head of the Agricultural Food Distribution Division of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, stated, “I hope the rice ice cream delivered this time served as a small but refreshing source of vitality for industrial workers exhausted by the continuing heatwave.” She emphasized, “Moving forward, we will do our utmost to provide policy support and promotion to raise awareness of the precious value of our rice by utilizing various processed rice products that anyone can enjoy in their daily lives, ultimately leading to a substantial increase in consumption.”
