브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 지시에 한미 연합연습 '을지 자유의 방패(UFS)' 훈련 기간이 총 11일에서 5일로 대폭 축소됐다.
합동참모본부는 19일 "이번 UFS 연습 기간을 17일부터 21일까지로 조정해 시행하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.
UFS는 북한의 다양한 도발 상황을 가정해 대응 절차와 새로운 전략을 숙달하는 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 중심의 지휘소 연습과 한미 장병이 실제 병력과 장비를 동원하는 야외기동훈련(FTX) 등으로 구성된다.
당초 한미는 오는 21일까지 북한의 도발에 대응하는 1부 '방어' 훈련을 진행한 뒤, 22일부터 27일까지 대북 역공격을 가정한 2부 '반격' 훈련을 실시할 예정이었다.
그러나 2부 훈련 전체를 취소하면서 전체 훈련 기간이 당초 11일에서 5일로 줄었다.
한미는 연합 야외기동훈련(FTX)도 일부 축소해 시행하기로 했다. 구체적인 축소 범위와 일정은 현재 한미 간 협의가 진행 중이다.
연합군사령부는 현재 전시지휘소를 CP 탱고(TANGO)와 경기 평택 캠프 험프리스로 이원화해 UFS 연습을 진행하고 있다.
합참은 "한미는 UFS 연습 목표 달성과 연합방위태세 확립을 위한 다양한 방안을 논의 후 시행하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.
안규백 국방부 장관도 이날 오전 국방부 청사에서 기자들과 만나 '2부 대북 반격 훈련이 취소되는 것이냐'는 질문에 "그런 방향으로 가는 것 같다"고 답했다.
'야외기동훈련이 10건 이상 취소될 가능성'을 묻는 질문엔 "그 정도는 아니다. (UFS 연습이) 끝나더라도 연중으로 실시할 것"이라고 설명했다.
안 장관은 아울러 이번 UFS 축소가 전시작전통제권(전작권) 전환 검증에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 우려에 대해선 "한국은 세계 국방력 5위고 경제 10위인 나라다. (전작권 전환 관련) 검증 평가는 1부 훈련에서 끝내도 상관없다"고 했다.
한편, 이번 훈련 축소는 트럼프 대통령이 최근 김정은 북한 국무위원장과의 관계 개선을 강조하며 한미 연합훈련에 대한 부정적인 입장을 밝힌 데 따른 조치로 풀이된다. 트럼프 대통령은 앞서 한미 연합군사훈련에 미국이 참여하기로 한 데 대해 불편한 심정을 내비치며 훈련 축소를 지시한 것으로 알려졌다.
