[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 제31회 부산국제영화제가 김종관 감독의 신작 장편영화 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’를 개막작으로 선정했다. 영화는 오는 10월 6일 개막하는 부산국제영화제에서 월드 프리미어로 처음 공개된다.
영화는 여름에서 가을로 계절이 바뀌는 시기를 배경으로 한 카페를 스쳐 지나가는 네 쌍의 남녀가 나누는 이야기를 담았다.
영화는 같은 카페를 서로 다른 시간대에 찾은 유진(김민하)과 현오(주종혁)의 우연한 만남을 시작으로 중학교 시절 친구였던 상미(한선화)와 영민(장률)의 뜻밖의 재회, 웹소설 작가 혜진(심은경)과 영화감독 동남(이희준)의 유쾌한 첫 만남, 아이돌 준비생 나경(전소영)과 연인 종수(김동휘)의 애틋한 순간을 차례로 그려낸다.
불특정 다수가 잠시 머물다 떠나는 카페라는 공간의 특성을 바탕으로 인물들의 서로 다른 서사와 관계, 감정의 변화를 경쾌하면서도 섬세한 시선으로 담아낸 것이 특징이다.
김종관 감독은 단편 데뷔작 ‘폴라로이드 작동법’(2004)으로 미쟝센단편영화제 심사위원특별상을 받으며 주목받았다. 이후 ‘낙원’(2005), ‘아카이브의 유령들’(2014) 등 다수의 단편영화를 연출했으며, 첫 장편영화 ‘조금만 더 가까이’(2010)를 선보였다.
이어 ‘최악의 하루’(2016)로 모스크바국제영화제 국제영화비평가연맹상을 수상하며 작품성을 인정받았고, ‘더 테이블’(2017), ‘조제’(2020), ‘아무도 없는 곳’(2021) 등으로 자신만의 영화 세계를 구축해왔다. 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 ‘페르소나’(2019)를 비롯해 ‘달이 지는 밤’(2022), ‘더 킬러스’(2024) 등 여러 감독과 협업한 옴니버스 프로젝트에도 참여했다.
이번 개막작 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’는 김종관 감독의 대표작 ‘더 테이블’과 마찬가지로 하나의 공간에서 펼쳐지는 여러 이야기를 다룬다. ‘더 테이블’은 2016년 부산국제영화제 ‘한국영화의 오늘-파노라마’에 선정된 바 있다.
부산국제영화제는 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’에 대해 김종관 감독이 꾸준히 탐구해 온 영화적 관심과 스타일, 시선이 한층 완성도 높게 구현된 작품이라고 평가했다. 또한 과도한 설정이나 극적인 전개에 의존하지 않고 인물들의 내면과 감정, 관계의 미세한 변화를 섬세하게 표현한 점을 작품의 강점으로 꼽았다.
김민하, 주종혁, 한선화, 장률, 심은경, 이희준, 전소영, 김동휘 등 배우들의 탄탄한 연기와 앙상블 역시 개막작 선정의 주요 배경으로 평가됐다. 영화제 측은 경쾌하면서도 진중한 작품의 분위기와 배우들의 조화가 제31회 부산국제영화제 개막작에 적합하다고 설명했다.
제31회 부산국제영화제는 10월 6일부터 15일까지 열리며, 개막작 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’도 영화제 기간 관객들에게 공개된다. 제21회 아시아콘텐츠&필름마켓은 10월 10일부터 13일까지 개최된다.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival has selected director Kim Jong-kwan’s latest feature, Day and Night Are for Each Other, as its opening film. The film will have its world premiere at the festival, which opens on October 6.
Set during the transition from summer to autumn, the film follows four pairs of men and women who cross paths at the same café and share a series of conversations and encounters.
The film depicts the chance encounter between Yoo-jin (Kim Min-ha) and Hyun-oh (Joo Jong-hyuk), who visit the same café at different times; the unexpected reunion of Sang-mi (Han Sun-hwa) and Young-min (Jang Ryul), former middle school friends; the lively first meeting between Hye-jin (Shim Eun-kyung), a web novel writer, and Dong-nam (Lee Hee-joon), a film director; and a tender moment shared by Na-kyung (Jeon So-young), an aspiring idol, and her boyfriend Jong-soo (Kim Dong-hwi).
Making full use of the café as a place where people come and go and stay only briefly, the film portrays the characters’ individual stories, relationships and emotional changes with a light yet sensitive touch.
Director Kim Jong-kwan first drew attention with his short film *How to Operate a Polaroid Camera* (2004), which won the Jury Special Award at the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival. He went on to direct numerous short films, including *Paradise* (2005) and *Ghosts of the Archive* (2014), before making his feature-film debut with *Come, Closer* (2010).
He further established his reputation with *Worst Woman* (2016), which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival. He subsequently directed *The Table* (2017), *Josée* (2020), and *Nothing Serious* (2021), developing a distinctive cinematic style. He has also participated in collaborative omnibus projects with other directors, including the Netflix original series *Persona* (2019), *The Night of the Falling Moon* (2022), and *The Killers* (2024).
Like Kim’s *The Table*, the opening film *Day and Night Are for Each Other* unfolds through multiple stories set in a single location. *The Table* was selected for the Korean Cinema Today – Panorama section of the 2016 Busan International Film Festival.
The Busan International Film Festival praised *Day and Night Are for Each Other* as a polished work that brings together the cinematic interests, style, perspective and worldview that Kim Jong-kwan has consistently explored throughout his career. The festival also highlighted the film’s thoughtful portrayal of the characters’ inner voices, emotions and subtle changes in their relationships without relying on excessive setups or dramatic plot twists.
The strong performances and ensemble work of actors including Kim Min-ha, Joo Jong-hyuk, Han Sun-hwa, Jang Ryul, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Hee-joon, Jeon So-young and Kim Dong-hwi were also cited as key strengths. The festival said the film’s light yet thoughtful tone and the chemistry among its cast made it a fitting choice for the opening film of the 31st Busan International Film Festival.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 6 to October 15, with *Day and Night Are for Each Other* being presented to audiences during the festival. The 21st Asian Contents & Film Market will be held from October 10 to October 13.
