이날 기자회견에는 민형배 특별시장, 김대중 교육감, 이근배 전남대 총장, 이주희 동신대 총장(광주전남지역대학교총장협의회 회장), 이호균 목포과학대 총장(광주전남전문대학총장협의회 회장) 등이 참석해 교육 체계 개편을 위한 강력한 의지를 모았다.
이번 공동선언은 지난 5일 교육부와 국가교육위원회의 대통령 업무보고 당시 전남광주통합특별시만의 차별화된 대학입시 및 교육 대전환 필요성이 제기된 데 따른 후속 조치다. 지방정부, 교육청, 대학이 협력해 지역교육의 자율성과 책임성을 대폭 확대하겠다는 공식 선언이다.
특히 이번 발표는 행정통합의 범주를 넘어 유·초·중·고 교육에서 대학 진학, 지역산업 취업 및 정주로 이어지는 선순환 구조를 구축한다는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다. 40년간 분리되어 있던 전남과 광주의 교육·산업 자원을 하나의 광역생활권으로 묶어 ‘인재가 모이는 광역도시’를 실현하겠다는 구상이다.
