The challenging life is more beautiful

“If you fail to adapt to change, you will be rejected and you will just sit down.”

-Poet Kim Deok-kwon

It was in 1965 when I left the army. As I was in charge of my life, I went to the military, so my family situation became unreasonable. To make matters worse, her mother fell victim to her scam group and put her hands on the business of finding a treasure buried off the coast of Incheon.

Can't it be like this? With courage, I woke up my younger brother at dawn and went to an empty shop in the Central Market in Sindang-dong. After meeting my father's friend at the next store and saying hello, I had to open the store, but I didn't have any money, so I borrowed 100,000 won. At that time, it was about 3,200 won for a bale of rice, so you could buy 30 kilns.

30 kilns of good rice were poured into a large stubble. It was really dazzling. The first guest who came out to buy rice was an alumni. My younger brother poured out three kiln of rice, and I spoke. The rice was good, but 30 kilns were sold in no time. Within a few days, I shed tears of emotion after repaying the 100,000 won I borrowed from my father's friend.

Since the summer of that year, rice has been scarce, and the government has released government rice to stabilize the price of rice. The Agricultural Cooperatives loaded 80 kilns of rice for each tea and served them one at a time. There were already several teas in advance, so it was just a swim on the ground. Over the years, I was able to regain stability. If I had given up on the challenge by being devastated, I may not have existed today.

A monk went on a journey with his disciple. At night, looking for a place to stay, they found a hut in the middle of a desolate field. A couple and children in rags lived in a barn-like house. There were neither grain nor trees growing around the house. Only one thin cow was tied up.

When a monk and a disciple asked for bed overnight, the head of the household was kindly greeted and served a light meal made with milk and cheese. The disciples were moved by their poor but generous heart. After eating, a monk asked them how they lived and lived in barren places far from cities and towns.

As her wife looked up, her husband said in a resigned voice. “We have a cow. It is eaten by squeezing milk or making cheese. If it remains, it is taken to the village and exchanged for other food. I'm living like that.”

The next morning, the monk and the disciple greeted thanks and left. When I reached the corner of the mountain, the monk said to his disciple. “Go and push the cow down the cliff.” The disciple doubted his ears. “They are barely living on cows. Without cows, nothing is left, and you may starve.”

But the monk gave orders again. “Go ahead and do what I say!” The young disciple was forced to sneak back to the hut with a heavy chest, pushing the cow down the cliff and dropping it. A few years later, the disciple traveled alone. And I passed by the hut where I had stayed before.

With feelings of regret coming over, I decided to visit the family and pray for forgiveness. Turning around the corner and entering the old place, he couldn't help but be surprised. A beautiful house was built in the place where there was once a barn-like hut, and a flower garden that was carefully cared for was surrounding it. In the new house, there was an atmosphere of abundance and happiness. When the disciple knocked on the door, a simple but elegant man came out.

Asked the disciple. “What happened to the family who lived here before? Did they starve and sold this place to you?” The man expressed that he did not understand English and said that they had been living here all the time. The disciple asked again, telling the story of his staying overnight there with an old teacher many years ago. “What happened to the family who lived here?”

"Ah yes! At that time, we had a cow. I could barely make a living by relying on that cow. I didn't have anything else. But one day, the cow fell off a cliff and died. To survive we had to do anything and learn new skills.

I had to find a new way of life. I had no choice. But that was the best luck that soon happened to us. So I'm living a lot better now than before.”

How is it? Most of us have a strong cow. Whatever it is. So I try not to look at the new world. 'If you really want to make your dreams come true, you need to know how to give up the safety net. However, many people hate change and tend to settle down.

However, if you fail to adapt to the change, you will be rejected and will just sit down. The most dangerous thing in the world is not to take any risks at all. The challenging life is more beautiful. Baekcheok Gandujin Ilbo (百尺竿頭進一步) is not this?
