Gwangju City “Please follow hygiene rules to prevent infectious diseases in summer”

city. Beware of water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases such as Salmonella and Campylobacter infection… Proper hand washing, safe water and food intake, and adherence to culinary hygiene

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = As the number of water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases is increasing across the country, Gwangju Metropolitan City is urging people to consume safe water and food and thoroughly observe personal hygiene rules such as hand washing in the summer when the heat starts requested

In summer, the high temperature and humidity increase bacterial growth, increasing the risk of food poisoning, and water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases such as Salmonella infection, Campylobacter infection, and pathogenic E. coli infection may become prevalent.

Water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases mainly occur when water or food contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa is ingested, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain appear.

Accordingly, Gwangju City is operating a 24-hour emergency contact system with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and public health centers in five autonomous districts until September to promptly report, investigate, and respond to waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases that occur frequently in summer.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) confirmed that the number of cases of Salmonella and Campylobacter infections is increasing every week through sample monitoring for intestinal infections last month.

To prevent waterborne and foodborne infections ▲Wash your hands with soap under running water for at least 30 seconds ▲Eat thoroughly cooked food ▲Boil water before drinking ▲Rinse and peel vegetables and fruits in clean water ▲If you have diarrhea Avoid cooking in the kitchen ▲Cooking hygienically ▲Sterilize knives and cutting board water, and follow precautions such as using separate cutting boards for fish, meat, and vegetables.

Song Hye-ja, head of the Gwangju Infectious Diseases Control Division, said, "In order to prevent water-borne and food-borne diseases such as food poisoning in the summer, it is necessary to consume packaged bottled or boiled water and follow personal hygiene rules such as thorough hand washing."
