‘Squid Game’ puts Korea on the Track of Advanced

Countries

Geun-Won Jeong/Columnist, Deep Psychoanalyst. Ph.D. at Strasbourg 1st

University, France

Two or three years ago, when foreign countries said that Korea was an advanced country, I was stunned. If you look at the comments on the 5th of October on the English Premier

League website, it seems that the admiration for Korea from abroad is greater. “Korea is a

very strange country. What is pouring out so much in that small country? Heung-Min Son, Hee-Chan Hwang, Squid Game, BTS. A typhoon called Korea is sweeping the world and

devastating it. But this is a pleasant typhoon.” It seems that we, as Koreans, do not know how much the status of Korea has changed in recent years.

‘Squid Game’ took first place in two weeks in all 83 countries where Netflix signed a

contract. Even in India, the graveyard of Hollywood, the number one position made

Hollywood feel bad. It is said that the 'Squid Game' craze will continue in the future. It also

recorded over 2 billion views in China, and is number one in 90 countries, including

countries where Netflix does not air. 'Squid Game' put the Satellite named 'Korea' into the

orbit of a developed country. Why is this craze blowing?

Smell of people

‘Ocean’s Eleven’, the story of 11 Hollywood thieves, focuses on advanced techniques

such as the art of stealing. “The Thieves,” directed by Choi Dong-hoon, is similar to the

story of stealing but it touches our hearts focusing on the thieves' life-stories. The ‘Squid

Game’ also belongs to the genre of death games, where you die if you drop out of the

game. Nevertheless, in the hands of director Hwang Dong-hyuk, Death Game focuses on

the stories of the lives of the characters rather than death, making them think deeply and

moving them. In this film, as the story progresses, death

becomes a device that gives the story dynamism and becomes the background, immersing the audience in the characters and the relationship between them.

In Korea, even if the story is meticulously structured, there is a human side to it. In 'Squid Game', kanbu and kkakdugi also fall into this category. When Grandpa Oil-nam and Ki-

hyun become a team, they enter into a relationship of sharing with solidarity by forming a

'Kanbu' in which they share marbles. Kkakdugi is a device created to engage younger

siblings or weak friends while playing games without alienating them. It is a rule that takes

care of each other and takes care of each other by saving them even if they are caught by the tag or by modifying the rules to suit the situation. In the West, there are no words to

describe these rules.

Kkanbu and Kkakdugi, which we take for granted, are surprising discoveries to people

around the world. Western philosophy based on reason is familiar with the dichotomy of 'is and not'. Korean traditional games have solved the rules that can encompass the human aspects that cannot but be taken into account with systems such as kanbu and kkakdugi.

One of the surprises of foreigners when they come to Korea is that when a side dish runs

out at a restaurant, it is provided without payment without payment. It is a calculation

method that does not fit into capitalist thinking. In other words, it is a culture in which

emotional things are exchanged beyond the dichotomy of mechanical thinking. Could it be

that emotions that cannot be felt in capitalism, which are rational, functional, and effective, are the cause of the 'squid game' craze in the world?

Where is the force beyond the dichotomy?

The author believes that the power to transcend the dichotomy comes from the delicate

observation of reading the mind. Foreigners say that when Koreans gather, it's like reading

the air. It may mean that Koreans have the sensitivity to capture the subtle feelings of being shy, marginalized, shy, and pretending to be polite but bewildered on the inside. In other

words, it can be said that the intuition to feel the texture of the heart is excellent. This kind of mind needs to get away from the ‘me’ and focus on the inner heart of the other person. This attitude is the inner element that creates compassion for the other person.

Kkakdugi is a play rule developed to address compassion for those who will be marginalized. Philosopher Schopenhauer, who valued compassion and sympathy, said that

compassion consists in the sharing of pain, not feelings or love. Kkakdugi goes beyond

sharing pain and sublimating it into an active and enjoyable play. I think it was this

kkakdugi that left a heavy impression on foreign people who saw 'Squid Game' as if they

were beaten in the head. When more people feel sympathy with these emotions, they

create collective emotions like collective intelligence.

I think that the reason we did well in dealing with COVID-19 came from the fact that I wore a mask well and followed the government's instructions due to the collective sentiment that I did not want to spread the corona to others rather than myself. I think that this collective

sentiment among Koreans made the death game 'Squid Game' not a way to die and kill, but to make a movie focusing on people who face death and care for each other. It means that it came from Korean DNA. It is an emotion that cannot be felt in the West, where it has jumped over emotion and has gone to the right and wrong reason. Foreigners may have been

puzzled by the irony felt in the game of death. It’s because you’re trying to use your heart

to share meaning and empathize.

Is it a new wave or an expression of living emotions?

The game that shows the most intense psychological warfare will be the 10 marbles game. This game, in which two close friends form a team, turns out to be a game in which I can

only survive by killing the opponent. This scene expresses the ugly and beautiful inside of human beings. Dawn and Ji-young speak their names for the first time and listen to each

other's stories. Ji-young loses the game by herself for dawn, where she has a purpose to

live. Ki-hoon and Grandpa Oil Nam also know that Ki-hoon has deceived him, but they are grateful for Ki-hoon's interest and choose death. In Korea, it is common for dramas and

movies to give meaning to humanity with this setting. The audience is a newcomer and

regards it as something that Korean films have to overcome.

In fact, it is said that the biggest reason foreigners are attracted to Korean movies and

dramas is the emotion they feel in this new wave. At the end of the drama, Ki-hoon shows the behavior of giving up the prize money of 45.6 billion won. Sang-woo decides to

commit suicide for Ki-hoon, making Ki-hoon receive a prize. To give meaning, the film

focuses not on the dry rules of the game, but on each individual's reasons for playing the game and their attitudes toward others. The purpose of the death game is to go beyond the dryness of mechanical success and failure, and connect it to the inner human mind. The

sentiments of Koreans that give meaning in this way contain a strong desire to be human

rather than a machine or animal. Could it not be that the reason people around the world

are enthusiastic about the 'squid game' is that they find hope for the future in a new wave

that does not give up being human?

The squid game shows the essence of capitalism, that people who are pushed to the brink of life can do anything for money, but Ki-hyeon, who survives to the end, gives up a huge amount of money. Without spending the money in your bankbook, you continue to worry

and live your life at the bottom. The movie ends with the nuance that he will accept the

offer to meet his oil-man grandfather again and challenge the 'squid game'. The whole

world will be prepared to wait for the sequel to see how he solves his troubles. In a

nutshell, the question is whether or not capitalism can be overcome.

A ‘Squid Game’ that asks difficult questions easily

The games that appear in the movie are games that seniors played a lot when they were

young. The rules of the game are easy enough to understand in 30 seconds. Game-related western movies are often based on elitism with a genius brawl. In contrast, ‘Squid Game’

feels like a democracy that anyone can access. Perhaps because it is so easy, the social phenomenon of enjoying the various games that appear in this film is appearing all over the world. It seems that the K-play craze is blowing.

Democracy is bolstered, with death as collateral, but play is thoroughly fair. You are free to give up the game before the game starts, or you can give up during the game. I think that

the person who made the game in this movie has some resentment towards fairness. Not

only that, but Kkakdugi is also included to ensure that no one feels unfair.

It's a fun movie to watch, but the social questions posed by 'Squid Game' are so heavy.

The movie leaves room for people to watch according to their interests. You can watch it

just for fun. It is an open film that can be viewed by asking philosophical questions such as human greed and violence, capitalism, golden omnipotence, and the bottom of humanity.

Nevertheless, it has the power to automatically ask questions because of the feeling that it is not a fun-oriented movie. This question poses a homework for us.

Does Korea have the capacity to do homework?

I have been surprised by Korea's leap forward several years ago and have been

researching various fields about Korea. At the end of last year, Monocle, a global monthly magazine in the UK, ranked Korea's soft power second in the world after Germany. As an

extension of that, the ‘squid game’, which created a global craze in a short time, is putting Korea on the track of an advanced country. Korea's development is not well introduced in

newspapers or broadcasts, so if you do not look for it, you may not know what Korea's

global status is like. So it doesn't make sense that the President of the Republic of Korea

and President Biden of the United States took their seats at the G7 meeting with the host

country's Prime Minister in the middle. To that extent, Korea has already developed its

capabilities. To the questions posed by the 'Squid Game', Korea must find and present the answers while practicing. Korea's responsibility has grown to the extent that the answers

Korea will provide will determine the future of the global village.

At the 68th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held on July 2, Korea was unanimously recognized as a developed country. Since the establishment of UNCTAD in 1964, Korea is the only country with the experience of developing countries,

developing countries and developing countries. As a major advanced country, it is not only the national strength that Korea wants to achieve that the existing advanced countries

could not do, but also the experience of this history. The US think tank, the Center for

Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and others argued that Korea should properly

establish a global trade order between developing countries and developing countries.

Because Korea's development is so fast, they do a Korean discount and worry that Koreans don't know their worth. Existing developed countries are also in Africa should also be

located in Seoul. This is because they expect a role that only Korea can play.

China is trying to be reborn as the center of the world through the Belt and Road Initiative, and is competing with the United States for global hegemony. Due to the geopolitical and

geoeconomic position of the Korean Peninsula, the United States and China try to draw

Korea to each other's side. Now, Korea has become so strong that China cannot easily

deal with South Korea, just as it retaliated when THAAD was installed in South Korea. This means that depending on how we Koreans do it, we can exercise the wisdom to moderate

the two rather than the shrimp caught between the whales. It is the craze of the 'Squid

Game' that imprints such capabilities on the world. The reason why CSIS held Korea-

related meetings is because it is an era in which the power of soft power is increasingly

related to national power. To the questions posed by the 'Squid Game' craze, Korea has

to answer the questions around the world, and it has enough capacity to answer them.
