SK, 그룹 친환경 사업 역량 결집..대규모 연구시설 신설한다

브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= SK가 그룹 내 친환경 사업 분야의 연구개발(R&D) 인력과 역량을 결집시키는 대규모 연구시설을 새로 만든다. 주요 그룹 가운데 그린 비즈니스 신기술 개발을 전담할 R&D 인프라 조성에 나선 것은 SK가 처음이다.

 

SK그룹은 25일 경기도 부천시와 손잡고 부천대장신도시 내 약 9만9000㎡(3만여 평)에 SK이노베이션 등 7개 관계사의 친환경 기술 연구개발 인력 등 3천여명이 근무할 (가칭) ‘SK그린테크노캠퍼스’를 설립하기로 했다고 밝혔다.

 

이 시설은 입주할 부지 등이 확정되면 2025년경 착공에 들어가 2027년 초 문을 열 예정이다. SK는 연면적 약 19만8000㎡(6만여 평) 규모로 지어질 이 시설 조성에 1조원 이상을 투입할 방침이다. 

 

이 곳에는 SK이노베이션 외에 SK에너지, SK지오센트릭, SK온, SK E&S, SKC, SK머티리얼즈 등 총 7개사의 p 차세대 배터리/반도체 소재 p 탄소 저감 및 포집 p 신재생에너지와 수소 등 친환경 기술개발 부문이 입주하게 된다.

부천시 등은 이번 협약을 통해 “SK그린테크노캠퍼스 사업의 성공적 추진을 위해 각종 인허가, 인프라 지원 등에 적극 협력하겠다”고 전했다.

 

SK그룹 관계자는 “ESG 경영 선도 기업으로서 친환경 사업을 하는 관계사들의 R&D 역량 등을 모아 시너지를 높이자는 취지에서 SK그린테크노캠퍼스 조성에 나서게 됐다”고 말했다. 

 

SK는 2020년 국내 최초로 RE100(재생에너지 전력 100% 사용)에 가입하고, 2021년 그룹 전체 차원의 ‘넷 제로(Net Zero, 탄소중립) 조기 추진’을 선언하는 등 환경문제 해결을 위한 비즈니스 혁신에 앞장서왔다.

 

최태원 SK 회장은 지난 2020년부터 CEO세미나 등을 통해 “그린 사업 전략을 택한 관계사들이 결집해 전략을 실현할 방법을 함께 논의하고 찾아야 한다”고 강조해왔다. 

 

이에 따라 SK는 2020년 관계사 CEO들의 협의체인 수펙스추구협의회에 환경사업위원회를 신설하고, 그룹 차원의 지속가능한 친환경 성장 동력 확보를 위한 R&D 거점 구축 방안 등을 검토해왔다.

 

SK는 그린테크노캠퍼스가 문을 열면 급증하는 그린 기술개발 수요에 신속히 대응하고, 관계사들의 기술 인프라와 전문인력을 최적 배치해 시너지를 창출할 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.
