Busan City held a meeting with Renault Korea Motors and partner companies to discuss countermeasures against the rapid rise in logistics costs.

The city plans to come up with practical support measures, such as summarizing the discussions at the meeting held at the Busan plant of Renault Korea Motors at 2:00 p.m. on the 6th and making suggestions to the government.

Lee Seong-kwon, Deputy Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, who presided over the meeting, discussed what the city had done to overcome the export crisis in the local automobile industry and future countermeasures, listened to the difficulties of the industry, and said, “Together with the central government, local finished vehicles, and partner companies. We will do our best to overcome the automobile export crisis.”

He said, “We will promote projects to promote the conversion of future cars by local parts makers and strengthen export capabilities without a hitch.”

The city announced that Mayor Park Hyung-joon is constantly communicating with the local business community to resolve the export crisis in the local finished car industry, which has recently been aroused by rising logistics costs. In addition, Deputy Mayor Lee Seong-kwon said that he is seeking solutions by meeting directly with the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries and the Vice Minister of Industry, suggesting support measures, and holding several working-level consultations with the government and related organizations.

Relevant organizations such as Renault Korea Motors, partner companies, Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Busan Economic Promotion Agency, Busan Research Institute, Busan Technopark, Korea Automobile Research Institute, and Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials attended the meeting to seek practical ways to overcome the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently granted the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Busan Port Authority an exceptional reduction of more than 50% on all port facility usage fees, such as port entry and departure fees, berthing fees, and berth fees, for car carriers entering Busan Port in order to enhance the export competitiveness of local finished car makers. requested

The rapid rise in logistics costs is because global shipping companies have reduced newbuilding orders due to concerns about a decrease in automobile transport volume due to the spread of Corona 19. As a result, the shortage of car carriers led to a sharp rise in freight rates.

Car carriers are suffering from shortages around the world, and as car exports have soared, especially in China, charter rates for car carriers have soared up to three times compared to before Corona 19.

As a result, Renault Korea, a local finished car maker, is experiencing a sharp decline in production competitiveness as it suffers from difficulties in securing a fleet and double-duty due to increased logistics costs. If this situation is prolonged, it will lead to a decrease in export volume, and we will have to worry about not only production but also employment reduction.

The finished vehicle and related parts industry in the region, which has suffered from a decrease in global demand, disruptions in parts supply, and an increase in raw material prices during the COVID-19 period, is again facing serious business difficulties due to export logistics problems.

Considering Renault Korea's status in the Busan region, a reduction in production could have a significant impact on the local economy. As this phenomenon is expected to adversely affect the difficult auto parts industry, it is argued that special measures and support are urgently needed at the government and regional levels to reduce the burden of logistics costs associated with automobile exports.
