Siddhartha penance statue, where you can directly see the appearance of Siddhartha before enlightenment

Suhahang Horse Statue at Hwaamsa Temple, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do

-Writer Kim Soo-jong

In India and Southeast Asia, Siddhartha 'Asceticism Buddha', which exists in real form, is called 'Suha Hang-Masang' and 'Hangma-Seongdo-Sang' in Korean Buddhism, and is mainly used as a mural painting in Buddhist temples. can only see The statue of Suhahangma is the sixth picture among the ‘Eight Figures’ depicting the life of Siddhartha.

It depicts Siddhartha fighting under the Bodhi tree with Pasun, the demon king, who was interfering with his practice, and winning his surrender. It deals with the process of Siddhartha risking his life under the bodhi tree near the Niranjana River in Bodh Gaya, defeating the demon king's nine temptations and threats and realizing the truth through six years of asceticism.

The statue of Suhahangma in Korean Buddhism is enshrined in Palsangjeon Hall or Yeongsanjeon Hall for worship or edification of living beings, or exists as a mural painting on the outer wall of Daeungjeon Hall or Geungnakjeon Hall. Physical and mental practice necessary for the realization of the purpose of religion is often referred to as asceticism. Among practitioners, there are not a few who practice self-mortification in order to achieve enlightenment through precepts and practice.

Even in the time of Siddhartha, monks took many paths. Methods called asceticism and revisionism were popular in India during the time of Siddhartha. The asceticists understood that a person's soul is inherently pure, but because of a body full of desires, it is impossible to cut off desire, the root of all quarrels.

They believed that extreme pain must be inflicted on the body in order to break attachments, curb greed, and purify the mind. Most of them were active and engaged in active asceticism. At the time, revisionists also understood only that the body and the mind were opposed.

It is the spirit of revisionism that seeks to attain a unique state of mind by cultivating ‘jen-jeong-yoga’ with the intention of refining the mind to restrain unrestrained activities and not to arouse material desires. After leaving home, Siddhartha went to the Ascetic Forest near the Nairanjana River in Bodh Gaya.

Five monks, including Kondanya, and many monks were staying there. Siddhartha, who was sitting quietly by the river, decided that he would be able to achieve enlightenment only by penance for a long time, and entered into penance. Siddhartha's penance first reduced the amount of food he ate.

He said, “I ate a grain of sesame and a grain of rice a day, and if there were beggars, I also gave them. The body was exhausted, and only bones and skin remained, and the stomach and back were flattened, making him look like a prince.” One day, Siddhartha thought, “I must go through the most severe penance.”

He said, “He didn't eat at all. He even refused to allow the celestials to pour nutrients through his pores. His body was extremely tired from fasting, and his golden body turned black, his body became like an 80-year-old man, and his backbone was so bent that he had to crawl on all fours to stand up and fall down on his knees to sit down. The eyes are sunken, and the breastbones and blood vessels rise above the skin.”

The figure of Siddhartha, who suffered asceticism to attain enlightenment, later became a great subject of Buddhist art in Gandhara. Unfortunately, Siddhartha gives up penance halfway through. He pushed his asceticism to the limit for six years, but he came to the conclusion that he could not reach the world of liberation with only lame asceticism that could not be with the people.

He came out of the ascetic forest and realized that “mortification is as meaningless as trying to tie a knot in the air.” Siddhartha, who had given up penance on the way out of the forest, had not attained enlightenment yet, and regained his strength by taking a bath and drinking milk and milk porridge brought to him by Sujata, a village girl.

It is said that the five monks who saw it considered him corrupt and left his side. It is difficult to find an ascetic Buddha statue in Korean Buddhism, which does not accept the suffering and reality of the people, either because it does not acknowledge the fall (?) of Siddhartha, a practitioner before enlightenment, or because it is indifferent to the practice method that has already failed.

Recognizing that both 'revisionism' and 'asceticism' are extremes, Siddhartha aims at enlightenment to escape from the suffering of impermanence by the middle way. Penance became an important turning point in Siddhartha's life. It is because he let go of lust and pain and realized the middle way.

The message given by penance is still very valid today in the 21st century. It greatly awakens practitioners in the reality where the majority of people move according to their desires in pursuit of pleasure, complacency, and delusion. The statue of Siddhartha asceticism is like a skeleton, the skull, and the ascetic Buddha statue is like a sitting skull.

Appearance during penance. It is a miserable appearance just before enlightenment. A masterpiece that accurately depicts Siddhartha's penance is the statue of Siddhartha penance in the Lahore Museum, Pakistan. It is the most representative piece among the collections of the Lahore Museum. It is, of course, the best work of Gandhara art.

The veins protrude, the ribs are exposed, the eyes are sunken, the belly against the back, and even the detailed veins circulating throughout the body are shaped. It is known as one of the three most beautiful Buddhas in the world, along with Seokguram Grotto in Tohamsan Mountain in Gyeongju and the statue of Dharma Wheel in Sarnath Archaeological Museum.

At the time, Siddhartha said, “Here, in this place, my body is so dry that skin, bone, and flesh may all be gone. I will never rise from this place until I get that realization.” In fact, Gandhara art in Pakistan has a deep relationship with Korean Buddhism, and there are still many Buddhist relics and relics in Pakistan.

Throughout its long history, various cultures and religions coexist in Pakistan, which has undergone changes and prosperity, such as the Mergar Civilization, the Indus Civilization, the Gandhara Civilization, and the Silk Road. Pakistan experienced its greatest revival in the 3rd century B.C. when King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty converted to Buddhism.

Pakistani monk Marananta arrived in Beopseongpo, Jeolla-do during the Baekje era. He went on to introduce Buddhism to the Korean Peninsula. Marananta established Korea's first Bulgapsa Temple in Yeonggwang-gun and spread Buddhism to Baekje. The oldest record of Gandhara for us is contained in Venerable Hyecho's travelogue Wangocheonchukgukjeon.

Hwaamsa Temple in Mt. Geumgang, a thousand-year-old temple in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, where you can see the statue of Siddhartha penance right before he attained enlightenment, was founded by Master Jinpyo in the 5th year of King Hyegong of Silla (769). (開祖) had a great influence on the establishment of penitential Buddhism in Korea.

Under the Bodhi tree next to the Daeungjeon Hall of Hwaamsa Temple, which has its roots in penitent Buddhism, you can see the Buddha statue of Siddhartha asceticism. This Buddhist statue of asceticism, created more than ten years ago, is one of the few temples in Korea where you can directly see and feel the statue of Siddhartha Suhahang Horse. daipapa@hanmail.net
