윤석열 대통령이 29일 '2023 제1회 한국·태평양도서국(이하 태도국)' 정상회의에서 "오늘 정상회의는 한·태도국 협력의 새로운 시작을 알리는 중요 이정표가 될 것"이라고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 청와대 영빈관에서 열린 한·태도국 정상회의 모두 발언에서 이같이 말한 후 "태평양이란 광활한 바다에서 한 배를 탄 이웃인 한국과 태도이 공동번영을 위해 힘차게 항해해 나가길 기대한다"고 말했다.
이 자리는 윤 대통령 취임 후 한국에서 처음 열리는 다자 정상회의로 태도국포럼(PIF)이 한국의 인도·태평양 전략 핵심 파트너임을 강조하는 상징성을 갖고 있다.
윤 대통령은 "대한민국은 국내적으로 개인 자유·인권을 존중하면서 법치 기반 국운영을 하고 있다"며 "국제적으론 모든 국가 주권·독립·규범에 기반한 국제 질서를 존중하고 있다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "대한민국은 태평양 도서국 포함 모든 나라와 상호 존중·신뢰에 기초한 지속가능한 협력 관계를 맺고 국제 사회에 책임있는 기여를 할 것"이라며 "우리는 자유·인권·법치의 보편적 가치와 평화 민주주의 비전을 공유하며 반세기 이상 우호적 성숙한 관계를 발전시켜 왔다"고 말했다.
또 "평화롭고 안전하며 번영하는 태평양 지역 구축을 목표로 하는 한국의 인도·태평양 전략과 태평양도서국포럼(PIF) 정상들이 발표한 2050 푸른 태평양 대륙 전략은 우리 인태전략과 그 방향성이 일치한다"며 "여기 계신 정상들과 힘을 합쳐 PIF와 대한민국이 함께하는 상생 파트너십을 추구하고자 한다"고 밝혔다.
더불어 "태도국 생존·번영에 직결된 기후변화·자연재해·식량·보건·해양 수산 위기는 연대와 협력을 통해서만 극복할 수 있다"며 "태도국포럼 역할과 모든 회원국 파트너십을 중시하는 하나의 푸른 태평양 원칙을 확고히 지지하면서 태도국과의 협력을 심화시켜 나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.

PIF 의장국인 쿡제도 마크 브라운 총리는 "한국과의 긴밀한 파트너십·협력을 중요하게 생각한다"며 "광범위하고 복잡한 도전 과제를 극복하기 위해선 한국과 같은 파트너 국가들이 필요하다"고 말했다.
