한동훈 국민의힘 전 대표의 지지율이 급상승하고 있다. 지금 부산의 판세는 마치 야구 경기 후반과 비슷하다. 초반 큰 점수 차로 뒤지던 게 단 한 번의 스윙으로 흐름이 바뀌는 분위기인 것이다. 그 스윙의 주인공은 ‘DH’, ‘지명타자’ 격인 한동훈이다.
한동훈의 영문 이니셜 ‘DH’는 우연치 않게도 야구의 ‘Designated Hitter’를 떠올리게 한다. 지명타자는 수비 부담 없이 오직 타격에만 집중할 수 있도록 배려를 받는다. 팀 내에서 가장 높은 장타율과 함께 강력한 한 방을 책임지는 존재이기 때문이다. 지금 부산 정치판에서 한동훈의 역할이 정확히 그렇다. 조직도, 당적도 없는 ‘무소속’이지만 그 자유로움이 오히려 한동훈의 선구안을 예리하게 하고 있다.

한동훈의 지지율이 한달 전에 비해 9%포인트 이상 급등하며 하정우를 바짝 추격하고 있다. 이는 단순한 지지율 상승이 아니다. 민주당 부산시장 후보 전재수의 페북 글을 날카롭게 파고든 그의 ‘언어 포렌식’이, 실투를 놓치지 않고 정확히 때려내는 지명타자의 타격처럼 정확했기 때문이다. 그 결과, 박형준의 지지율도 상승하기 시작했다.
한동훈의 ‘동남풍’은 그냥 ‘바람’이 아니다. ‘토네이도’다. 한동훈이 수비 부담을덜고 지명타자로 타석에 들어서면서 경기 분위기가 바뀌고 있다. 큰 점수차가 좁혀지고 후반으로 갈수록 팬들은 그 지명타자의 스윙 한 방에 기대를 거는 분위기가 되는 것이다.
중요한 건 그 ‘기대’다. 기대가 없으면 지지층은 절대 결집할 수가 없다. 이는 선거에 있어 최악의 경우다. 선거전은 기대의 ‘자기실현성’의 장이다. 모두가 같은 기대를 하면 그 기대는 시혈된다. 선거는 응집력 게임인 것이다. 따라서 지지자들로 하여금 끝가지 기대를 걸도록 해야 한다. 아무리 팀 재정이 힘들어도 MLB 모든 팀이 반드시 ‘슈퍼스타’ 지명타자를 꼭 배팅 오더에 넣는 이유다.

더 흥미로운 것은 보수의 결집이 부산을 넘어 영남권 전체로 확산될 가능성이다. 이른바 ‘나비효과’다. 작은 날갯짓이 폭풍을 만든다는 그 이론처럼, 부산 북구갑에서 시작된 한동훈의 바람이 지역 정치의 관성 자체를 흔들고 있다.
단 한 번의 장타가 야구에서 흐름을 바꿀 수 있다. 특히 지명타자의 홈런은 단순한 1 타점이 아니라 팀 전체 분위기를 바꾸는 ‘게임 체인저’가 될 수 있다. 지금 한동훈의 스윙이 그런 경우다. 그가 만들어낸 큰 타구 하나 하나가 지지자들의 이목을 끌고, 박형준의 추격을 가능하게 하며, 보수 진영 전체를 향해 관심을 일깨우고 있는 것이다.

지명타자는 매 타석이 승부다. 공을 정확히 보고 강하게 휘두르는 것 즉, 강공이 지배전략이다. 지명타자에게 희생번트를 지시하면 그게 비효율이다. 한동훈에게 사퇴를 요구하는 이들, 박민식 공천을 강하게 주장하는 이들은 지명타자에게 희생번트를 대라고 요구하는 격이다. 엉터리 전략, 하지하책이라 하지 않을 수 없다.
