청와대가 6일 "미국의 호르무즈 해협 상선 지원 작전 '프로젝트 프리덤' 작전이 종료돼 한국 참여 검토 필요성이 사실상 없어졌다"고 밝혔다.
위성락 국가안보실장은 이날 오후 춘추관 기자간담회에서 "그간 해양자유구상·프로젝트 프리덤 참여 여부를 검토하려 했으나 해당 작전이 이미 종료돼 참여 검토가 꼭 필요한 상황이 아니게 됐다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "프로젝트 프리덤이 단기적 해협 통과 지원 작전이라면 해양자유구상은 해협 안정·항행 자유를 위한 보다 폭넓은 접근"이라며 "국제 해상로 안전·항해 자유는 매우 중요한 가치"라고 했다.
또 "영국·프랑스 주도 관련 회의도 참여한 바 있다"며 "해양자유구상 역시 국내법 절차와 여러 여건을 종합 고려해 검토 중"이라고 덧붙였다.
앞서 전날 청와대는 프로젝트 프리덤 참여 여부 관련해 "국내법 등을 고려해 검토 중"이란 입장을 내놓은 바 있다.
이어 호르무즈 해협에서 발생한 HMM 운용 선박 나무호 폭팔·화재 관련해선 "현지 항구 예인이 한국시간 7일 새벽부터 오전 사이 완료될 것"이라며 "조사팀이 현장에 가 상황을 파악 예정"이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 "초기엔 피격 가능성을 염두에 두고 NSC 실무회의 개최도 검토했으나 이후 추가 정보 확인 결과 피격 여부가 확실치 않은 상황"이라고 전했다.
