5월24일은 올해 부처님 오신 날을 기념하는 날입니다. 불교 사암이나 단체들은 부처님 오신 날 행사준비로 바쁠 시간입니다. 인류에 즐거움을 주는 날(부처님 오신 날)에 얽힌, 짤막한 일화를 글로 써 봅니다.
◯…김택근 시인(김대중 전 대통령 회고록 집필 작가)이 쓴 칼럼이 경향신문 5월6일자에 “이것이 없으면 저것도 없다”라는 제목으로 게재됐습니다.
필자는 이성철(전 조계종 종정)스님과 관련된 저서를 발간한 바 있습니다. 저서의 제목은 《성철스님 세상살이-성철스님 세상살이: 성철 스님의 미공개 일화 150선》입니다. 이 책은 1993년 성철 스님이 열반한 이듬해인 1994년에 출간되었습니다. 그래서, 나는 이성철 종정 스님과 관련된 글이 나오면, 눈여겨봅니다.
그런데, 김택근 시인은 위 칼럼의 결론 부분에서 "눈을 들어 저 푸른 대지를 보십시오, 어떤 분별도 하지 않고 어떤 차별도 없이 생명을 품습니다. 대지를 향해 두 손 모아 다시 성철 스님의 법어를 떠올립니다. '부처님은 세상을 구원하러 오신 것이 아닙니다. 세상이 이미 구원되어 있음을 알리려 오신 것입니다.'"라고 썼습니다.

◯…필자는 지난 2019년 1월21일, 부처의 산상 설법지인 인도의 영취산에 올랐습니다. 그 후 브레이크뉴스 2019년 2월22일자 “부처는 '욕망의 불꽃을 멈추고-쉬고-끄라고 했다!'”라는 제목의 기사로 인도 방문기를 소개했었습니다. 그 일부(아래)를 옮깁니다.

부처님 그대, 보드가야 보리수나무 아래서 욕망의 끝을 보았지. 그런 게 아무 의미가 없다는, 바람 같은 것이라는 걸, 욕망의 끄트머리엔 손에 쥘 수 있는 건 아무 것도 없다는 것을, 사람의 모든 일이 길바닥의 흙먼지와 같다는 것을 깨달았지.
부처님 그대, 가진 것 다 버리고, 이글거리는 태양의 열기 같은 욕망도 다 버리고, 누더기 입고 맨발로 걷는 수도승으로 한 평생을 살았지.
보드가야를 찾는 사람들, 그대 부처님 마음을 알까나. 5체 투지, 고행의 의미를 알까나. 보리수나무 한잎한잎 떨어지는, 아무 것도 없음으로 돌아가는, 자연의 이치를 알까나. 모든 것을 버림으로서 모든 것을 얻었던 그대. 홀로 선정에 들었던 외로움을 알까나.

◯… A column written by Poet Kim Taek-geun (author of former President Kim Dae-jung's memoirs) was published in the May 6th issue of the Kyunghyang Shinmun under the title “If This Is Not There Is That.”
The author has previously published a book related to Venerable Lee Seong-cheol (former Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order). The title of the book is *Venerable Seongcheol's Life in the World: 150 Selected Unpublished Anecdotes of Venerable Seongcheol*. This book was published in 1994, the year after Venerable Seongcheol passed away in 1993. Therefore, I pay close attention whenever writings related to Supreme Patriarch Lee Seongcheol appear.
However, in the concluding section of the column mentioned above, poet Kim Taek-geun wrote: "Lift your eyes and look at that blue earth; it embraces life without any distinction or discrimination. He likely continued to perform his royal duties. The gap between listening to the Dharma and putting it into practice persists to this day. O Buddha, you abandoned your throne. You abandoned beautiful women. You cast aside splendid honor.
O Buddha, beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, you saw the end of desire. You realized that such things are meaningless, that they are like the wind; that at the tail end of desire, there is nothing to grasp; and that all human endeavors are like the dust on the road.
O Buddha, having cast aside everything you possess, having cast aside desires like the scorching heat of the sun, walking barefoot in rags I lived my entire life as a monk.
To those visiting Bodh Gaya, do you understand the mind of the Buddha? Do you understand the meaning of prostration and asceticism? Do you understand the natural principle of the Bodhi tree, where leaves fall one by one, returning to nothingness? You, who gained everything by abandoning everything. Do you understand the loneliness of entering into meditative absorption alone?
People—people—visiting the holy site of Bodh Gaya, where there is no room to set foot. Please look back on the life of the Buddha, who abandoned everything to gain everything.
