정치에는 두 종류가 있는 것 같다. 하나는 사람들에게 추앙받으려는 정치, 다른 하나는 사람들을 추앙하려는 겸손한 정치다. 전자는 늘 “누가 왔는가”를 자랑한다. 거물 정치인, 당 지도부, 힘 있는 인사들이 얼마나 줄을 섰는지를 보여주며 세를 과시한다. 박민식 개소식에서 보이는 모습이다. 반면 후자는 “누구와 함께 하는가”를 말한다. 시장 상인, 지역학교 교장, 봉사자, 식당 사장, 이름 없는 시민들을 앞세운다. 이번 부산 북갑 보궐선거에서 드러난 한동훈의 모습은 분명 후자에 가깝다. 그리고 바로 그런 마인드가 지금 한국 정치에 절실히 필요하다.
한동훈은 개소식에서 국회의원이나 중진 정치인을 앞세우지 않았다. 대신 자신에게 찰밥 도시락을 건넸던 할머니를 소개했다. “대통령보다 더 모시기 힘들었다”는 그의 농담에는 단순한 유머 이상의 메시지가 담겨 있었다. 정치는 결국 권력자에게 인정받는 게임이 아니라 시민에게 마음을 얻는 과정이라는 것이다.
위선적인 정치인들은 시민을 표몰이 수단으로 여긴다. 선거철이면 악수하고 사진 찍지만 정작 무대 위 주인공은 언제나 정치인 자신이다. 하지만 한동훈은 주민들을 무대의 중심으로 올려놓았다. 그는 그들을 소개하며 “저는 이런 분들과 같이 한다”고 말했다. 이 말은 대단히 상징적이다. 정치의 주력이 국회의원 배지나 당권이 아니라 생활인의 삶이어야 한다는 선언이기 때문이다.
이런 모습은 묘한 기시감을 준다. 과거 DJ가 목포에 출마했을 때도 그랬다. 당시 권력과 기득권은 총동원됐다. 서울의 고관대작들이 몰려왔고, 지역구에서 사실상 국무회의를 열다시피 했다. 선심성 공약과 돈, 조직과 권력이 쏟아졌다. 민심은 결국 탄압받고 눌린 쪽으로 향했다. 왜일까. 시민은 본능적으로 안다. 누가 자신들을 진심으로 대하는지, 누가 단지 권력을 위해 이용하는지를 말이다.
한심한 정치인들은 자신 스스로를 '높은 사람'이라고 착각한다. 하지만 역사를 바꾸는 정치인들은 늘 반대였다. DJ도, YS도 그리고 노무현도 기득권의 질서와 충돌하며 성장했다. 그래서 공격도 많이 받았다. 하지만 역설적으로 바로 그 점 때문에 민심은 움직였다. 한동훈도 마찬가지다. 거대한 조직과 권력이 한 사람을 집요하게 끌어내리려 할수록 시민은 “왜 저렇게까지 할까”를 생각하게 된다.
한동훈이 “청와대에 가게 되면 제일 먼저 모시겠다”고 말하는 건 그냥 너스레가 아니다. 자신의 정치적 방향에 대한 철학인 것이다. 힘 있는 사람에게 인정받는 정치가 아니라, 평범한 시민의 삶을 기억하는 그런 정치 말이다. 지금 한국 정치가 잃어버린 것도 바로 그것이다. 여의도의 문법은 점점 더 권력게임과 계파싸움에 갇혀가지만, 시민이 원하는 것은 자신의 삶을 기억해주는 정치다.
결국 정치의 승패는 조직표만으로 결정되지 않는다. 명분과 미래가치가 더 중요하다. 시민들은 생각보다 훨씬 영리하다. 누가 과거의 권력에 기대고 있는지, 누가 미래를 향해 가고 있는지를 안다. 그래서 정치의 진짜 힘은 “얼마나 많은 거물을 데려왔는가”가 아니라 “얼마나 많은 평범한 사람들의 마음을 얻었는가”에서 나온다.
지금 필요한 것은 바로 그런 마인드다. 시민을 무대 장식으로 쓰지 않고 정치의 주인으로 대하는 태도. 권력을 과시하기보다 사람을 기억하는 자세. 한국 정치가 다시 살아나기 위해 필요한 것도 결국 거창한 전략이 아니라 그런 기본으로의 회귀인지 모른다.

It seems there are two types of politics. One is politics that seeks to be revered by the people, and the other is humble politics that seeks to revere the people. The former always boasts about “who has come.” It flaunts its power by showing how many heavyweight politicians, party leaders, and influential figures are lining up. This is the scene seen at Park Min-sik’s opening ceremony. On the other hand, the latter speaks of “who one is with.” It puts market merchants, local school principals, volunteers, restaurant owners, and nameless citizens at the forefront. The image of Han Dong-hoon revealed in the recent Busan Buk-gap by-election is clearly closer to the latter. And that very mindset is desperately needed in Korean politics right now.
At the opening ceremony, Han Dong-hoon did not put National Assembly members or veteran politicians at the forefront. Instead, he introduced the grandmother who had handed him a sticky rice lunch box. His joke that he was “harder to serve than the President” carried a message beyond mere humor. It implies that politics is ultimately not a game of gaining recognition from those in power, but a process of winning the hearts of the citizens.
Hypocritical politicians regard citizens as mere means to garner votes. During election season, they shake hands and pose for photos, but the true protagonist on the stage is always the politician themselves. However, Han Dong-hoon has placed the residents at the center of the stage. Introducing them, he said, “I stand with people like these.” This statement is highly symbolic. It is a declaration that the true focus of politics should be the lives of ordinary people, not the badge of a National Assembly member or party leadership.
This scene evokes a strange sense of déjà vu. It was the same when DJ ran for office in Mokpo in the past. At that time, power and vested interests were mobilized to the fullest. High-ranking officials from Seoul flocked to the district, and it was practically like holding a cabinet meeting there. Populist promises, money, organizations, and power poured out. Ultimately, public sentiment turned toward the oppressed and suppressed. Why? Citizens know instinctively. It is about who treats them with sincerity and who uses them merely for the sake of power.
Pathetic politicians delude themselves into thinking they are "high-ranking figures." However, the politicians who change history have always been the opposite. DJ, YS, and Roh Moo-hyun all grew by clashing with the established order. Consequently, they faced many attacks. Yet, paradoxically, it was precisely because of this that public sentiment shifted. The same applies to Han Dong-hoon. The more a massive organization and power persistently try to bring one person down, the more citizens begin to wonder, "Why are they going to such extremes?"
Han Dong-hoon’s statement that he would "serve him first if he were to go to the Blue House" is not mere flattery. It is a philosophy regarding his political direction. It is not politics that seeks recognition from those in power, but politics that remembers the lives of ordinary citizens. That is precisely what Korean politics has lost today. While the grammar of Yeouido is becoming increasingly trapped in power games and factional infighting, what citizens want is politics that remembers their lives.
Ultimately, the victory or defeat in politics is not determined solely by organizational votes. Justification and future value are more important. Citizens are far more astute than one might think. They know who is relying on the power of the past and who is moving toward the future. Therefore, the true power of politics stems not from "how many heavyweights have been brought in," but from "how many ordinary people have been won over."
What is needed right now is precisely that kind of mindset. An attitude of treating citizens as the masters of politics, rather than using them as stage decorations. A stance of remembering people rather than flaunting power. Perhaps what is needed for Korean politics to revive is not grandiose strategies, but a return to such fundamentals.
