K-Dessert Brand ‘HURMA’ Utilizing Gyeongsan Jujubes Selected for Consecutive Startup Support Programs
Achievement of Teams at Korea Scholarship Foundation’s Daegu Youth Startup Center… Securing a Total of 31 Million Won, Including Commercialization Funds
Teams residing at the Korea Scholarship Foundation’s Daegu Youth Startup Center are drawing attention as they are successively selected for various startup support programs with a dessert brand utilizing local specialties.
The Korea Scholarship Foundation announced that Han Jun-young (a senior in the Department of Life Sciences at Yeungnam University), CEO of ‘Halmonic,’ a resident company at the Daegu Youth Startup Center, was consecutively selected for the Gyeongsangbuk-do Small Business Plan Contest and the Gyeongsan City Youth Pre-Startup Entrepreneurship Training Program through his K-Dessert brand ‘HURMA,’ which utilizes Gyeongsan jujubes and date palms. With the selection for this project, CEO Han secured 15 million won in commercialization funds through the Gyeongsangbuk-do Small Business Plan Contest and 12 million won in startup activity support from the Gyeongsan City Youth Pre-Startup Incubator Program.
In addition, having been selected for the Yunicorn Startup Club Support Program and the Daegu Jung-gu Community Startup Activity Support Program, he has secured a total of 31 million won in support for commercialization and startups. Based on this, he plans to actively pursue product development, market validation, and sales channel expansion.
CEO Han Jun-young began his startup activities in 2024 by moving into the Korea Youth Startup Center of the Korea Scholarship Foundation. This year, Kim Do-geon (a third-year mechanical engineering major at Yeungnam University) joined the team to strengthen its capabilities. Lee Seung-hoon and Park Seong-yong are also participating, collaborating on product development and commercialization.
Huruma is a food and beverage brand that develops various dessert products, such as nuts, jams, and chocolates, by combining jujubes—a representative specialty of Gyeongsan—with date palms, which are widely consumed in the Middle East. It is garnering attention as a regional co-prosperity startup model that enhances the added value of specialty products through collaboration with local farmers.
In particular, while Gyeongsan jujubes have faced limitations in expanding the processed food market as they are mostly distributed in dried form, Huruma is targeting young consumers and the gift market by introducing new dessert products incorporating date palms.
Furthermore, the company is pursuing the establishment of a cooperative system with local jujube farmers and plans to explore entry into overseas markets after verifying domestic market potential through online sales and pop-up store operations.
CEO Han Jun-young stated, "Starting a food business requires preparation for many aspects, including not only product development but also patents, hygiene management, packaging production, and verifying consumer response." He added, "I was able to obtain practical startup know-how and various support information through the Korea Scholarship Foundation's Startup Dormitory and Startup Center, and the environment that allowed me to focus on the startup was a great help." He added, “Our goal is to create a new dessert culture utilizing Gyeongsan jujubes and to grow it into a K-dessert brand capable of promoting local specialties to the global market.”
Park Chang-dal, Chairman of the Korea Scholarship Foundation, stated, “This is a meaningful case where the challenge of a young entrepreneur who created a new business model using local specialties has led to tangible results.” He added, “We will continue to provide various support to ensure that youth entrepreneurship leads to the revitalization of the local economy and increased income for farming households.”
Meanwhile, the Korea Scholarship Foundation is a quasi-governmental organization under the Ministry of Education that operates various educational support programs, including national scholarships, student loans, and national work-study scholarships. It also operates entrepreneurship dormitories in five regions nationwide, providing university and graduate student entrepreneurs with housing, workspaces, and expert consulting.
