포항제철소는 최근 에너지 비용 상승과 경영 환경 변화에 대응하기 위해 전 직원을 대상으로 에너지 절감 방안을 공모했으며, 총 133건의 개선 아이디어가 접수됐다고 밝혔다.
이번 공모전은 에너지 소비 구조를 근본적으로 개선하고 생산 현장의 효율성을 높이기 위한 목적으로 마련됐다. 특히 단기적인 절감 대책을 넘어 공정 전반의 체질 개선과 비용 절감 기반 구축에 초점을 맞췄다.
공모에는 선강, 압연, 스테인리스(STS), 설비 등 제철소 전 부문 직원들이 참여했으며, 현장 적용 가능성이 높은 기술적·구조적 개선 방안이 다수 제안돼 관심을 모았다.
심사는 각 부문 선임 리더 6명으로 구성된 평가위원단이 맡아 진행했다. 평가 항목은 구조적 개선 효과, 실행 가능성, 기대 성과 등을 종합적으로 반영했으며, 최우수상 1건과 우수상 2건, 장려상 5건, 참여상 20건이 최종 선정됐다.
최우수상은 생산기술부 생산기술섹션 김성윤 대리가 제안한 ‘열연 보존형 반제품 야드 구축을 통한 가열로 원단위 저감’ 아이디어가 차지했다. 해당 제안은 열연 공정 이전 단계에서 반제품의 열 손실을 최소화할 수 있는 저장 공간을 구축해 가열로 사용 에너지를 줄이는 방안으로 높은 평가를 받았다.
이와 함께 FINEX부 성형탄공장 신동호 차장과 STS제강부 김영식 리더가 제안한 개선안도 우수성을 인정받아 우수상 수상자로 선정됐다.
박남식 포항제철소장은 “환율과 국제 유가 상승 등으로 제조업의 에너지 비용 부담이 커지는 상황에서 에너지 절감은 기업 경쟁력 확보를 위한 핵심 과제”라며 “수상작을 비롯한 우수 아이디어에 대해서는 현장 적용 가능성을 면밀히 검토해 실질적인 비용 절감 성과로 이어질 수 있도록 지원하겠다”고 말했다.
한편 포항제철소는 이번 공모전을 계기로 에너지 절감 활동을 더욱 확대할 계획이다. 부서별 절감 목표를 체계적으로 관리하고 상시 제안 제도를 활성화하는 등 지속적인 개선 활동을 통해 생산 효율 향상과 친환경 경영 실천에 나설 방침이다.

Pohang Steelworks announced that it solicited energy saving measures from all employees to respond to recent rising energy costs and changes in the business environment, receiving a total of 133 improvement ideas.
This contest was organized with the purpose of fundamentally improving the energy consumption structure and increasing efficiency at production sites. The evaluation was conducted by an evaluation committee composed of six senior leaders from each division. The evaluation criteria comprehensively reflected structural improvement effects, feasibility, and expected outcomes, and one Grand Prize, two Excellence Prizes, five Encouragement Prizes, and twenty Participation Prizes were finally selected.
The Grand Prize was awarded to the idea titled "Reduction of Heating Furnace Unit Costs through the Construction of a Hot-Rolled Preservation-Type Semi-Product Yard," proposed by Assistant Manager Kim Seong-yun of the Production Technology Section in the Production Technology Department. This proposal received high marks for its approach to reducing heating furnace energy consumption by constructing a storage space that minimizes heat loss of semi-products at the stage prior to the hot-rolling process.
In addition, improvement proposals submitted by Deputy General Manager Shin Dong-ho of the Brining Coal Plant in the FINEX Department and Leader Kim Young-sik of the STS Steelmaking Department were also recognized for their excellence and selected as Excellence Prize winners.
Park Nam-sik, Head of Pohang Steelworks, stated, "In a situation where the burden of energy costs on the manufacturing industry is increasing due to rising exchange rates and international oil prices, energy conservation is a key task for securing corporate competitiveness." He added, "We will closely review the feasibility of field application for excellent ideas, including the winning entries, and provide support to ensure they lead to tangible cost-saving results."
Meanwhile, Pohang Steelworks plans to further expand its energy saving activities through this contest. It intends to enhance production efficiency and practice eco-friendly management through continuous improvement activities, such as systematically managing saving targets by department and activating an ongoing suggestion system.
