경주시는 지방도 904호선 광명동 광명삼거리와 KTX 경주역세권을 잇는 광명~화천 연결도로가 오는 30일 전면 개통된다고 16일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 광명삼거리에서 역세권 일대를 연결하는 총연장 1.6㎞ 구간을 기존보다 넓은 왕복 4차로로 확장하는 공사로, 경상북도가 시행했으며 총 211억 원의 사업비가 투입됐다.
시는 지난 4월 광명삼거리에서 제1화천교까지 0.7㎞ 구간을 먼저 개통한 데 이어, 제1화천교부터 반도유보라아파트까지 0.9㎞ 구간의 공사를 마무리해 오는 30일 개방할 예정이다. 이에 따라 전체 1.6㎞ 구간이 하나의 도로망으로 연결된다.
광명~화천 도로는 KTX 경주역세권과 주변 공동주택단지, 도심을 연결하는 주요 간선도로로 꼽힌다. 최근 역세권 개발사업과 신규 아파트 입주가 이어지면서 증가하는 교통 수요에 대응하고, 도심과 역세권 간 이동 편의를 높이기 위해 추진됐다.
경주시는 이번 도로 확장으로 인근 산업·연구시설에 대한 접근성이 향상될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 특히 양성자가속기연구센터를 비롯한 주요 시설의 물류 이동 여건 개선에도 도움이 될 것으로 전망했다.
아울러 도로 선형 정비와 차로 확충을 통해 차량 흐름이 원활해지면서 출·퇴근 시간대 교통체증 완화는 물론 교통사고 위험 감소에도 긍정적인 효과가 있을 것으로 내다봤다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “광명~화천 도로 확장사업이 마무리되면서 KTX 경주역세권과 도심을 연결하는 교통 인프라가 한층 강화됐다”며 “앞으로도 시민들의 이동 편의 증진과 지역 균형발전, 역세권 활성화를 위해 도로망 확충에 지속적으로 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

This project involved expanding a 1.6 km section connecting Gwangmyeong Samgeori to the station area into a wider four-lane road (two lanes in each direction). The project was implemented by North Gyeongsang Province with a total investment of 21.1 billion won.
Following the opening of the 0.7 km section from Gwangmyeong Samgeori to the 1st Hwacheon Bridge last April, the city has completed construction on the 0.9 km section from the 1st Hwacheon Bridge to Bando Ubora Apartments and plans to open it on the 30th. As a result, the entire 1.6 km section will be connected into a single road network.
The Gwangmyeong-Hwacheon Road is considered a major arterial road connecting the KTX Gyeongju Station area, surrounding residential complexes, and the city center. The project was initiated to address the increasing traffic demand resulting from recent station area development projects and the move-in of new apartments, and to enhance the convenience of movement between the city center and the station area.
Gyeongju City expects that this road expansion will improve accessibility to nearby industrial and research facilities. In particular, it is anticipated to help improve logistics conditions for major facilities, including the Proton Accelerator Research Center.
Furthermore, it is expected that the road alignment improvements and lane expansion will facilitate smoother traffic flow, leading to positive effects in alleviating traffic congestion during rush hour and reducing the risk of traffic accidents. Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young stated, “With the completion of the Gwangmyeong-Hwacheon road expansion project, the transportation infrastructure connecting the KTX Gyeongju Station area with the city center has been significantly strengthened.” He added, “We will continue to strive to expand the road network to enhance citizens’ mobility convenience, promote balanced regional development, and revitalize the station area.”
