이와 관련해 포항 남구 국민의힘 당협 관계자는 “남·북구 당협 공동으로 선거관리위원회를 구성해 의장 후보를 선출하고 추대하는 방향으로 논의하고 있다”며 “다만 북구에서도 출마자가 나올 가능성이 있는 만큼 남구 당협 차원의 별도 선거관리위원회를 구성해 후보 단일화와 함께 북구 당협과 조율해 나갈 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
이에 따라 향후 남·북구 당협 간 조율 결과에 따라 현재 남구 출신 후보 중심으로 형성된 의장 선거 구도가 남·북구 간 경쟁 구도로 재편될 가능성도 제기된다.
다만 북구 당협 관계자의 개입설과 관련해서는 선을 그었다. 해당 관계자는 “그런 소문이 있다는 이야기는 들었지만 워낙 많은 이야기가 돌고 있어 모두 사실이라고 볼 수는 없다”며 “억측일 가능성도 있다”고 밝혔다.
