POSCO Completes Korea's Largest Electric Furnace... Transition to Decarbonized Production System..Total investment of 600 billion won in the Gwangyang Electric Furnace, with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons... Reducing carbon emissions by approximately 75% compared to blast furnaces, ensuring the smooth implementation of the 2050 Decarbonization Roadmap... Establishing a business structure based on a decarbonized production system..Reporter Kim Doo-hwan

POSCO has completed the construction of a large-scale electric furnace with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, and is set to begin full-scale production of carbon-reducing steel.

The completion ceremony, held at the Gwangyang Steelworks on the 17th, was attended by Prime Minister Kim Min-suk, National Assembly members Kwon Hyang-yup and Cho Gye-won, POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa, POSCO President Lee Hee-keun, and POSCO Labor Union Chairman Kim Seong-ho.

Previously, POSCO commenced the construction of the new electric furnace in February 2024 to comply with domestic and international decarbonization policies and to actively respond to customer demands for carbon-reducing products.

The newly completed electric furnace is the largest single facility of its kind in Korea, involving a construction workforce of 270,000 person-days and an investment of approximately 600 billion won.

The blast furnace-converter method, which involves feeding iron ore and coal (coke) into a blast furnace to produce molten iron and then refining it in a converter, enables the mass production of high-quality steel but results in high carbon emissions. In contrast, electric furnaces can achieve up to approximately 75% carbon reduction compared to blast furnaces by recycling scrap.

POSCO is also focusing on developing "mixing technology" to improve the quality of products produced in electric furnaces.

Mixing technology is a refining technique that mixes molten iron produced in electric furnaces and blast furnaces; it enables the production of high-grade steel while reducing carbon dioxide emissions compared to its own blast furnaces.

POSCO aims to mass-produce automotive and electrical steel sheets by 2030 by securing additional core technologies, such as the sorting and classification of scrap—its primary raw material—and precise control of composition during the refining process.

To achieve this, POSCO has designated high-grade electric furnace steel as one of its "Eight Strategic Products" and has formed an integrated project team encompassing research, production, and sales to accelerate the development of specialized products.

Furthermore, the company plans to simultaneously develop "bridge technologies" that contribute to carbon reduction within its existing production system, such as the injection of hydrochloric acid gas into blast furnaces, top-bottom blowing converters, and carbon-reducing raw material technologies. Recently, not only have domestic demands for carbon reduction intensified, such as national greenhouse gas reduction targets and the 4th Emissions Trading Scheme, but the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is also gaining momentum.

POSCO aims to transition to a decarbonized production system through its hydrogen reduction steelmaking process, 'HyREX.' The newly constructed electric furnace will play a key role in driving greenhouse gas reduction and strengthening the portfolio of carbon-reducing products until the commercialization of hydrogen reduction steelmaking.

Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "The electric furnace completed today is not merely the addition of a single facility, but a declaration of a strong determination to address the challenge of the times—decarbonization—and to change the landscape of the global market." He added, "POSCO will proactively respond to the demands for low-carbon steel from global customers and further solidify its position as a leading company in future materials." Prime Minister Kim Min-suk stated, “The completion of the electric furnace at Gwangyang Steelworks is an event symbolizing the future of the steel industry as it evolves into an eco-friendly industry,” adding, “We will support the improvement of steel scrap quality and the stabilization of its supply, and proceed with the hydrogen reduction steelmaking demonstration project without any setbacks.”
