대전광역시가 글로벌 바이오기업 머크(Merck)사의 둔곡지구 바이오 공정시설 준공을 앞두고, 대규모 투자 유치 결실을 지역 청년들의 실질적인 고용 기회로 전환하기 위한 ‘지역인재 채용 협력 체계’ 구축에 본격 착수했다.
이번 신규 고용 연계 대책은 허태정 대전시장의 특별 지시에 따라 마련됐다. 글로벌 바이오 선도기업의 대전 투자가 단순한 생산 인프라 조성을 넘어 지역의 우수한 청년 인재들이 원하는 양질의 일자리 창출로 귀결될 수 있도록 지자체와 기업, 대학 간의 삼각 협력 고리를 한층 견고히 하겠다는 취지다.
현재 대전 둔곡 국제과학비즈니스벨트 거점지구에 조성 중인 머크사의 ‘아시아·태평양 바이오프로세싱 생산센터’는 바이오 의약품 제조 과정에 필수적인 원부자재를 생산하는 최첨단 시설이다. 총 부지 면적은 약 4만 3,000㎡(약 1만 3,000평)에 이른다.
머크사는 이번 생산센터 건립에 총 4,300억 원 상당을 투입했으며, 시설이 본격 가동되면 오는 2028년 말까지 300여 개 이상의 신규 일자리가 만들어져 대전 바이오클러스터의 중추적인 역할을 담당할 것으로 전망된다.
그동안 대전시는 머크사의 안정적인 연착륙을 돕기 위해 산업통상자원부, 대한무역투자진흥공사(KOTRA) 등 유관 기관과 긴밀한 공조 체계를 유지해 왔으며, 지난 2024년 6월 둔곡지구 외국인투자지역 착공 이후 행정·재정적 지원을 아끼지 않았다.
허태정 대전시장은 “머크사의 대전 바이오 생산센터 건립은 대전이 글로벌 바이오 허브 도시로 도약하는 중대한 분수령이 될 것”이라며 “대규모 투자 유치 성과가 지역 청년들이 몸소 체감할 수 있는 고용 창출로 이어질 수 있도록 시 차원의 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 강조했다.
아울러 허 시장은 “첨단 바이오 원부자재를 다루는 공정 시설인 만큼, 설계와 시공 단계부터 향후 가동에 이르기까지 전 과정에서 환경 및 안전 기준을 철저히 이행해야 한다”며 “대전 시민들이 안심하고 신뢰할 수 있도록 가장 안전하고 모범적인 글로벌 사업장의 표본을 보여달라”고 덧붙였다.
앞으로 대전시는 머크사의 생산센터 가동 시점에 맞춰 지역 청년 맞춤형 바이오 전문 인력 양성 프로그램을 연계할 방침이다. 아울러 지역 대학 및 관계 기관과의 협력을 고도화해 기업과 지역 사회가 동반 성장하는 상생 생태계를 넓혀나갈 계획이다.
한편, 머크사는 지난 2025년 12월 대전권 13개 대학과 지역혁신대학지원체계(RISE) 대학협력 공동프로그램 추진을 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결하고, 둔곡지구 생산센터의 본격적인 가동에 맞춰 지역 인재들이 폭넓게 진출할 수 있는 맞춤형 고용 환경을 조성하는 데 적극 협력하기로 뜻을 모은 바 있다.
