이들 단체는 18일 오전 대구 달성군 이진숙 의원 사무실 앞에서 기자회견을 열고, “이번 포럼이 5·18 민주화운동의 역사적 사실과 의미를 훼손했다”고 주장했다.
앞서 지난 13일, 국회도서관에서 이 의원과 새역사국민운동이 공동 주최한 해당 포럼에서는 5·18 민주화운동이 ‘열흘간의 소요사태’에 불과하다는 주장, 그리고 5·18 유공자와 전두환 전 대통령을 둘러싼 기존 역사적 평가를 부정하는 발언 등이 나왔다. 이에 단체들은 즉각 반발에 나섰다.
주최 측은 당시 포럼에 대해 “5·18의 발생과 전개, 소위 ‘광주정신’의 역사적 의의와 이후 한국 사회에 미친 영향 등을 다양한 시각에서 재조명하는 자리”라고 설명했다. 참고로 새역사국민운동은 이미 지난 7월 대구에서도 같은 주제의 토론회를 연 바 있다.
이날 기자회견에서 김균식 5·18민주화운동부상자회 경상강원지부장은 “1980년 5월, 국민이 군부의 권력 찬탈과 민주주의 파괴에 맞서 일어서던 역사를 부정하는 것”이라며 “5·18을 왜곡하고 폄훼한 점에 대해 국민 앞에 사과하고, 정치적·도의적 책임을 져야 한다”고 강조했다.
김승무 대구시민단체연대회의 상임대표 역시 “5·18은 이미 역사적으로 평가가 끝난 사건인데, 현역 국회의원이 이를 공론화하고 국회에서 관련 행사를 연다는 건 더욱 심각한 일”이라며 국민의힘이 이 의원을 징계해야 한다고 촉구했다.
정당 소속 인사들도 잇따라 비판에 가세했다.
신원호 기본소득당 대구시당 위원장은 “국회가 5·18 역사 왜곡의 장이 되고 있는 현실이 변한 게 없다”며 “이진숙 의원은 국민 앞에 사과하고 의원직에서도 물러나야 한다”고 목소리를 높였다.
최우영 더불어민주당 대구 북구을 지역위원장도 “국회의원이 주최한 자리에서 5·18을 왜곡하는 발언이 나왔다면 주최자로서 책임을 져야 한다”며 국민의힘의 출당 조치와 이 의원의 의원직 사퇴를 요구했다.
김성년 정의당 대구시당 사무처장은 “개인 차원의 역사왜곡을 넘어 국회의원이 이 문제를 공론화했다는 점에서 훨씬 더 심각하다”며 강도 높은 징계를 촉구했다.
황순규 진보당 대구시당 위원장은 “5·18은 국가 폭력에 맞서 시민들이 민주주의를 지켜낸 역사”라며 국회의 단호한 대응을 주문했다.

이날 모인 42개 단체는 기자회견문을 통해 ▲이진숙 의원의 5·18 피해자·유공자·유가족·국민 대상 공개 사과 ▲의원직 사퇴 ▲국민의힘의 정치적·윤리적 책임 ▲포럼 관련 발언에 대한 관계 당국의 조사와 법 위반 여부 판정 등을 공식 요구했다.
특히 단체들은 해당 포럼에서 나온 발언과 행위가 ‘5·18민주화운동 등에 관한 특별법’에 위배되는지 엄정한 조사도 강조했다. 이 법은 5·18 관련 허위사실의 공개 유포를 처벌 대상으로 삼고 있다. 다만 일정 목적을 위한 예술·학문·연구·보도 등은 예외로 두고 있어, 구체적인 법 위반 여부는 별도 판단이 필요하다.
참석자들은 마지막으로 의원 사무실에 항의서한을 전달하며 “5·18 민주화운동을 왜곡·폄훼하는 행위를 즉각 멈추고, 국민 앞에 책임 있는 자세를 보여야 한다”고 촉구했다.

Figures affiliated with political parties also joined the criticism one after another.
Shin Won-ho, Chairman of the Basic Income Party's Daegu City Chapter, raised his voice, stating, "The reality that the National Assembly has become a venue for distorting the history of the May 18 Uprising remains unchanged," and demanded that "Representative Lee Jin-sook must apologize to the people and resign from her position."
Choi Woo-young, Regional Committee Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea for Daegu Buk-gu Eul, also demanded that the People Power Party expel her and that she resign from her parliamentary seat, stating, "If remarks distorting May 18 were made at a gathering hosted by a National Assembly member, the organizer must take responsibility."
Kim Seong-nyeon, Secretary-General of the Justice Party's Daegu City Chapter, urged for severe disciplinary action, noting, "This is far more serious because a National Assembly member has brought this issue to public attention, going beyond mere historical distortion at an individual level."
Hwang Sun-kyu, Chairman of the Progressive Party's Daegu City Chapter, called for a firm response from the National Assembly, stating, "May 18 is a history in which citizens defended democracy against state violence." The 42 organizations gathered on this day issued a press statement officially demanding: ▲ a public apology from Assemblywoman Lee Jin-sook to the victims, meritorious service recipients, bereaved families, and the public of the May 18 Uprising; ▲ her resignation from her parliamentary seat; ▲ political and ethical accountability from the People Power Party; and ▲ an investigation by relevant authorities into the remarks made at the forum and a determination of whether any laws were violated.
In particular, the organizations emphasized the need for a rigorous investigation into whether the remarks and actions made at the forum violate the "Special Act on the May 18 Democratization Movement, etc." This law designates the public dissemination of false information related to May 18 as punishable offenses. However, it makes exceptions for artistic, academic, research, and reporting activities intended for specific purposes, requiring a separate judgment on whether specific legal violations occurred.
