보령의료봉사상은 의료 취약 이웃에 인술 베풀며 헌신하는 ‘이 땅의 슈바이처’ 발굴 위해 제정

고용곤 연세사랑병원 병원장이 의약계 사회공헌 분야 최고 권위를 지닌 보령의료봉사상을 수상했다.
보건복지부 지정 관절전문 병원인 연세사랑병원은 고 병원장이 제40회 보령의료봉사상을 수상했다고 4월 3일 밝혔다.
고 병원장은 4월 2일 서울 용산구 대한의사협회 대회의실에서 진행된 제40회 보령의료봉사상 시상식에서 저소득층 관절질환 환자에 대한 의료봉사와 해외 의료봉사를 실천해온 공로를 인정받아 본상을 수상했다.
올해로 40주년을 맞이한 보령의료봉사상은 1985년 ‘주식회사 보령(옛 보령제약 주식회사)’과 대한의사협회가 국내외에서 의료봉사를 펼치는 의료인을 발굴하고 기리기 위해 마련한 상이다. 대상 수상자에게 상패와 상금 5000만 원, 본상 수상자에게 상패와 상금 500만 원이 수여됐다.
고용곤 병원장을 비롯해 임현석·최영단 우간다 베데스다 메디컬센터 원장 부부, 윤호인 국경없는의사회(MSF) 활동가가 본상을 수상했으며, 최일열 한양대 명예교수가 대상을 받았다.
고 병원장은 지난 2003년 개원 이후 국내외 의료 사각지대에 있는 이들에게 힘이 되기 위해 21년간 꾸준히 봉사를 실천했다. 전남 진도 의료봉사를 시작으로 저소득층 환자 인공관절 수술비 후원, 산악인 유가족 자녀의 삶 지원을 위한 장학금 전달, 네팔 의료환경 개선과 교육을 위한 지원 및 네팔 현지 의료봉사 등 봉사활동을 펼쳐온 것이다.
고 병원장은 수상 소감에 대해 “ㅇ너무 훌륭한 분들이 상을 받아서 처음에는 이 상을 받지 않으려고 했다”며 “나는 그냥 의사이고 관절 치료를 하다 보니 어려운 분들이 너무 많다는 걸 알게 됐고, 자연스럽게 봉사라고 생각하지 않고 그 분들을 도왔던 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이어 “저에게 상을 준 것은 앞으로도 제 자리에서 어려운 분들에게 도움을 주라는 뜻으로 여기고 실천할 것이다. 그리고 제가 가진 상 중에서 이 상을 가장 소중하게 여기겠다”고 덧붙였다.
보령의료봉사상은 국내외 의료 취약지역에서 이웃에게 인술을 베풀며 헌신하는 ‘이 땅의 슈바이처’를 발굴하기 위해 지난 1985년 대한의사협회와 보령이 제정한 상이다. 지난 40년간 183명의 수상자를 배출했으며, 의약계 사회공헌 분야에서 최고 권위를 지닌 상으로 인정받고 있다.

Yonsei Sarang Hospital President Lee Yong-gon has received the Boryeong Medical Service Award, one of the most prestigious awards for social contribution in the medical field.
Yonsei Sarang Hospital, a joint specialty hospital designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, announced on April 3 that Dr. Ko received the 40th Boryeong Medical Service Award.
Dr. Ko received the award at the 40th Boryeong Medical Service Award ceremony held on April 2 at the Korean Medical Association's grand conference room in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in recognition of his medical service to low-income patients with joint diseases and overseas medical service.
The Boryeong Medical Service Award, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, was established in 1985 by Boryeong Corporation (formerly Boryeong Pharmaceutical Corporation) and the Korean Medical Association to identify and honor medical professionals who provide medical service at home and abroad. The grand prize winner received a plaque and a cash prize of 50 million won, and the second prize winner received a plaque and a cash prize of 5 million won.
Dr. Goh Yong-gon, President of Hanyang Hospital, Dr. Lim Hyun-seok and Dr. Choi Young-dan, President of Bethesda Medical Center in Uganda, and MSF activist Yoon Ho-in received the main prize, while Hanyang University Professor Emeritus Choi Il-yeol received the grand prize.
Since the hospital opened in 2003, Dr. Goh has been steadfastly practicing service for 21 years to help those in the medical blind spots at home and abroad. Starting with medical service in Jindo, Jeollanam-do, he has sponsored artificial joint surgeries for low-income patients, provided scholarships to support the lives of children of bereaved mountain climbers, and provided support for improving the medical environment and education in Nepal.
"I didn't want to accept the award at first because there were so many great people who received it," said Dr. Goh. "I'm just a doctor, and when I was treating joints, I realized that there were so many people in need, so I naturally helped them without thinking of it as service."

The Boryeong Medical Service Award was established by the Korean Medical Association and Boryeong in 1985 to recognize the "Schweitzer of this land" who are dedicated to serving their neighbors in medically underserved areas at home and abroad. Over the past 40 years, 183 recipients have been honored, and it is recognized as the most prestigious award in the field of medical social contribution
