양주시에 의하면 오봉산 석굴암(경기도 양주시 장흥면 교현리 1번지 오봉산 자락에 자리한 대한불교 조계종 제25교구 본사인 봉선사의 말사)은 신라 때부터 존재하였다고 전해진다. 일반인이 석굴암 가는 길은 녹녹하지가 않다. 군(軍) 보호시설과 우이령 길에 막혀 북한산 국립공원 입구에서 차량 통행이 제한되고 있다. 4Km 정도를 도보로 올라가야 한다. 고립무원의 사찰인 것이다.
